Italian Honeymoon Budget?

Kat, on April 15, 2022 at 7:46 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 7

Hey all! My fiance and I just decided we wanted to spend our honeymoon in Italy sometime in October of 22. One of our wedding vendors has a honeymoon travel agent service, so I inquired without any real idea of what it costs - we've literally done NO honeymoon planning, as our wedding is taking up all my brain space right now. Anyway, I gave them a budget of $5k, which I thought was moderate, maybe a little conservative, but they came back and said they wouldn't even work with us without a budget of at least $9k not including flights! I did say that my vision was sipping wine by a pool in Tuscany, but I feel like I could plan a week long trip for less than $9k...

Has anyone planned an Italian honeymoon? What did you end up spending? What are some of your best $$ saving tips while still allowing a little splurge here and there? I want to spend at least a night or two in a swanky honeymoon suite Smiley smile Other than that, I can be flexible as long as I'm not in a hostel!

Do a Google search for “(region) on a budget”. Most of the websites provide suggestions that don’t include a hostel at all. What I saw is that renting a vacation home is cheaper overall than a hotel, similar to in the US.

Italy can definitely be budget friendly. I didn’t honeymoon there, but it is where we got engaged. We were there for a week and definitely did not spend more than $3k (including airfare …tho that we went pretty “budget” on that). We based ourselves in Rome and traveled by train but nothing was crazy expensive. Meals were reasonable, wine was cheap, our hotel wasn’t fancy (but had a balcony and was right near the Colosseum) and accommodations were so affordable that when we did an overnight in Florence (to do a Tuscany wine tour), we just kept our Rome room too to not have to bother fussing with our luggage. You can absolutely have a fantastic Italian honeymoon for your $5k budget! …though I will say I’m not sure the practicality of pool in Tuscany that time of year — it’s a mild climate and I would expect it to be chilly for poolside (…I do think there is a thermal bath/natural hot spring somewhere though!)

I think it’s definitely doable. Perhaps go without a travel agent and plan it yourself: flights, cars/taxi/shuttle/trains, Airbnb or hotel, food, shopping.

The only problem is that right now, a nonstop flight in June is running between $3 and $5 round trip for two people Smiley sad (I’m trying to book a trip myself.)

Definitely look into doing it yourself. I did a trip with my MOH back in 2019 - 2 weeks, 3 countries (Iceland, France, UK) - all in including air, train, rental cars, places we stayed and the money we spent there was about $4K. And thats with flights from Los Angeles. For around the same time you'll be going (October).

We're planning a honeymoon in France/Italy and I'm doing it all myself - with the plan being that it won't be that expensive. Keep an eye on flights - they change on Tuesdays (price wise). I've found round trip, non stop, Los Angeles to London for $400. It might be coach, but it's a money saver. The bonus being you're going in October - its "off season" in that its not the summer or around major holidays, so that will be cheaper. Also take a look at AirBnBs. That can be a BIG money saver because you can buy your own groceries and save some cash on breakfast/snacks. If you're going Tuscany - they probably have some great villas that you can get the whole place to yourself to just chill. Or you can look for great Bed and Breakfasts. There are some really cute ones that I've found in Italy myself for our trip. I always like to do one or two really nice fancy dinners wherever I am. I use it as my big splurge.

Also look at websites like Viator - great for experiences. I've used it for a TON of stuff. Champagne tours in France, dinner cruise down the Seine in Paris, Island explorations in Iceland, Luaus in Hawaii - you name it. You can get great deals and see people's reviews. Tuscany probably has some amazing winery tours.

Rental cars - take a look at where you get your airfare from - they often offer bundles after the fact for rental cars.

Also look into things like Rakuten - its an online shopping plug in that you can use to get cash back on purchases. Most of the time you can get cash back on your flights and (if you go this route) hotels. We just went to visit friends in Hawaii and I got $5 back on our flights. Seems small, but it adds up. A lot of the places you can book off of have cash back deals with them. Never sucks to get cash back!

$9k is exorbitant! $5k will get you a lavish (at least by my standards) vacation. Like others have said, you may just want to plan it yourself. We're honeymooning in northern Italy, but I'd be happy to give you tips or ideas.
