Issue finding makeup artists who are familiar with East Asian features

Natasha, on December 5, 2019 at 10:54 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 7

Hi brides, do you have trouble finding makeup artists that understand your East Asian features (particularly, the rounder face and almond shaped eyes)?

I founds several MUA who have shown me samples of work from past East Asian clients, but my friends and I both think they were made up as if they had Western features, and the makeup made the eyes look even smaller and brows look angry.

So far I am very surprised at the lack of diversity in advertisement in the salon around my area (Boston, Providence), so it's been hard for me to screen for artists who are familiar with my features by looking at their portfolio. Sadly, yesterday I asked for a sample of East Asian client photo and the salon owner got really offended and snapped at me! The last person who told me she can do all ethnicity did such a bad job for me I ended up wiping out before the engagement photoshoot and did it myself.

How should I approach this problem? Again, I am not asking for an Asian markup artist, but someone who has the versatility to adapt to different facial structures and is open minded about it.

P.S. There are 1 or 2 artists in my area who specialized in Asian makeup, but because of their monopoly, they charged 2-3 times more than industry price and it's way out of my budget ($400-500+).

I’m south East Asian and I also have trouble looking for a MUA that understands my features. I’ve given up and decided to do my own makeup. You can go that route if you still have a lot of time to look for good products and perfect your makeup skills. Or you can ask a family member who’s good at makeup to do it for you

Thanks! Yes, I might do my own, but still a little worried. I have years of experience of doing my own stage makeup as a dancer. My friends and family kind of advice me against it because it's not the "norm" to do your own makeup here in the US. They think having someone do it on the day with other bridesmaid is fun and takes the stress way. I think it adds more stress not knowing if you will like the result or hate it (even with a trial...). But until I find someone I like, I don't plan on investing hundreds of dollar for something I'd hate.

Yeah, I am afraid of that too. Especially cause most MUA make the women look super glammed up and I want a more natural look. I've decided to do my own. My friend bought me some new makeup as a wedding gift, I just need to sit down to test it out!

This can be a challenge for sure. I have almond shaped eyes and eastern Asian features as well and I was super mindful of this when I chose my MUA. I did a lot of research and looked at so many galleries until I saw an artist that has a diverse client population where I felt confident enough to pursue her. Here is the makeup she did for me for our engagement session. It was my first “trial” and I would say all the hours of research paid off! Don’t give up, your MUA is our there (:

Do you know any Asians that have gotten married and had their makeup professionally done? I didn't have any issue because I asked my fiance's sister, aunt, my sisters, etc. who did their makeup because I liked it. My makeup artist has a diverse client base, many Asians, so I did a trial run with her.

I’m half Asian, my bridesmaids were all Asian, and I had a lot of problems trying to find someone who I felt could do a quality makeup on my very mixed-looking face. When I looked on Google and wedding websites, I often found MUA who were well known, but tended to do the same makeup style on al their clients and charged outrageous prices. What I ultimately did, was search though hashtags on Instagram, like #ocmua or #orangecountyweddingmua and variations like that, and found up-and-coming artists who had an easy to access portfolio via their Instagram. For me, I ended up going with a girl who was young, but had gone to makeup school, and had some photos of her work on Asian faces. I took a leap of faith and trialed with her twice and ended up satisfied enough with the work and her price to go with her. I found that she put in a lot of effort simply because she was portfolio building and wanted to ensure that any potential photos she got from her gigs were good enough to be showcased in her portfolio. She ended up using one of my photos in her portfolio.
