Is It Tacky ?

Rebelle Fleur, on May 12, 2021 at 2:49 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11
Hello Fellow Wirees,

As many COVID brides had to, I postponed my wedding. Due to that, I have 200 invitations sitting in a box that have no use. As my ceremony will now take place outdoors in the middle of July I was going to purchase custom fans for my guests to use for that portion of the evening (cocktail hour and the reception are indoors). I was thinking instead of purchasing custom fans for 300+ Dollars, I could DIY fans and use the invitations attaching wooden fan handles to them.
Do you think it’s tacky, or a cost effective way of saving pretty good card-stock that will otherwise go to waste ?

I think that would be a fun nod to your original wedding plan.

Your fur baby is adorable 😍.

Thank you! My mom was insisting that it was tacky and to just go ahead and purchase the custom fans since it isn’t that expensive but I just feel like it’s such a waste to throw them away.

You could always make a joke of it by writing "reduce, reuse, recycle!" on them Smiley smile I think it would be a good way to re-purpose the original invitations and cut down on costs!!

Hey Allie, That’s such a cute idea! I haven’t thought of that.

I say go for repurposing them if you can, you already spent the money on it - no use spending more money. If your mom thinks its tacky and is willing to pay for actual fans then she can pay for it!

I would assume all of your guests know you postponed, so I'm sure they'd all "get" what those originally were. I certainly wouldn't call it tacky, and I agree with the first comment - it's a cute nod to your original wedding date. If I were a guest, I'd get a giggle out of it.

We had already sent out our wedding invites before Covid hit and fortunately got a credit from Zazzle for new ones (so no extra cost to us, except stamps) but if we still had them I was tempted to literally hand write on them - crossing out the old date, adding a new one, and then a comment about Covid - and send them out as our new invites. I thought it would be a fun way to just acknowledge how screwy the situation was without wasting anything.

I think making the fans from the old invites is totally fine if you want to go that route, just keep in mind DIY often doesn't save money and takes a lot of time. If it's something you want to do, go for it! I don't feel like it would be tacky.

I actually like your idea, I think it's cute and creative! As the other Allie commented on this, you could put a little cute sign or something wherever you put them that has a little saying about recycling. It's a great idea and honestly...a lot of people will probably never use the custom fans again if you get them, so it probably wouldn't be worth it to spend.

I don't think that is tacky ! like what PP said you could poke fun at it as a reference to the postponement and also it does help to recycle it

I would get a kick out of getting a fan like that at a wedding - it recycles, it acknowledges the fact that you had to change your plans, and it shows that you rolled with the punches and didn't take things too seriously (though I'm sure you had many moments when you were MOST unhappy with the situation)
