International honeymoon in summer 2021?

Alyssa, on December 16, 2020 at 10:40 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 10
Hi! My FH and I are set to have our destination wedding in Sanibel, Florida on July 17, 2021. We had postponed a year from our previous date in July 2020 due to the pandemic. Originally we wanted to have our honeymoon in Costa Rica, but have not purchased flights or done any planning to make this happen. We are just unsure about traveling internationally in 2021 because of the virus. I know some countries have closed borders at the moment too. Anyone planning an international honeymoon in summer 2021? Our current plan is to fly out to California and do a road trip of the west, but if things get better we were thinking of switching back to the Costa Rica plan. We feel it’s too soon to make any plans because things are constantly changing with the virus and there’s no telling how much better it will be by July. Thoughts?

I would not risk traveling internationally at all on 2021.

I would only make plans that are fully refundable/changeable.

You'd have to check with government websites to see what borders are open.

Personally, I would not make any plans for 2021 that involve travelling if you’re in the US. The American response to COVID has been utterly shocking (‘thanks’ Trump) and there will no doubt be a massive influx of cases following the Christmas – New Year holidays. Almost a year on from the origination of COVID there are still 200,000 new cases of COVID in America per day.

I completely understand the intention that maybe by then things will be ok and travelling will be safe but in all honesty, there is tremendous work that is required to contain this virus and I don’t think by July 2021 things will be ok. Personally, I wouldn’t risk travelling even at that point, and something you need to consider is that once Biden is inaugurated, there will likely be many COVID restrictions (finally) put in place, possibly some concerning travel.

To put it into perspective for you (at least from my point of view), where I live in Australia, our local transmission is so minimal we've had 5 new cases break out lately (after 2 weeks of no new cases) and despite our borders being closed for almost the entirety of the year, and the vaccine being rolled out early next year, we are anticipating that international travel won’t resume until late 2021 and even then it will be very regimented and to select destinations only.

Thank you ladies! We will probably just be sticking to our current plans to stay in the states.

I am from California and even I would not suggest coming here for anything. We don't have a clear picture of what life could look like here in 7 months. Many many of my friends have gotten Covid by just being outdoors and have been incredibly sick. Yes some counties are operating against the shut down, I am talking bars open speakeasy style and people having lunch at a restaurants that refuse to close. Los Angeles alone has more Covid cases than some entire states. I felt safer in Cancun, Mexico than I do here at home in Los Angeles. I am also not Mexican so its not like I have family there or anything. Here in Cali, stores have empty shelves, Airbnb's and hotel prices have gone up due to new cleaning/disinfection guidelines. Places to visit are closed and some have police presence to ensure no one crosses the line. Some of our most famous and beautiful hiking trails have been shut down because people were vandalizing them after they started reopening the state. In Cancun my temperature was taken at arrival to my resorts I was given multiple hand sanitizer bottles to carry around with me. Any restaurant I visited took my temp and asked me to sanitize my hands before entering. Any activity did the same and if we took any extra bags like a back pack with towels, etc everything was sprayed with disinfectant before the trip even began. There was sanitizer everywhere! The people working there are so happy to be able to be providing for their families again that they give the absolute best service to their customers. In California things aren't great, even for a road trip I am afraid. When we flew there we made sure we chose an airline that was flying at a reduced capacity, Delta was flying at 50% first class and 60% economy. We flew first class, there were about 10 passengers in 1st class including my husband and I, typically it seats 20 people.

That’s very helpful information, thank you! Maybe it’s a good idea for us to look elsewhere, or even postpone our honeymoon until things are better.

Alyssa, its food or thought you know. A little of my experience with Covid in California and traveling to Cancun, Mexico during the pandemic, but not during stay at home orders. Some people make it seem like things in Cali are running smoothly but thats why our numbers keep soaring. My husband and I are essential workers and continue to work out of our home 5 days a week in areas that are not so sanitary. When we vacationed we made sure we could cancel everything and have it reimbursed. We went when the numbers were lower and took absolutely every precaution we could to avoid being around others. Our 1st year wedding anniversary trip to Europe was cancelled and we desperately wanted to get away. Also the resorts in Cancun were only allowing 50% capacity so it made the trip more enjoyable and stress free.

No I completely understand! We would love to visit California, but after reading what you said I began to think that July might not be a good time and it might be best to wait. Originally we wanted to do an international trip, but that’s not looking likely in 2021 and we wouldn’t want to travel anywhere out of or in the country that the virus is still affecting. The only way that we would even be going on our honeymoon in July is if we are both vaccinated and if the spot we choose has low to zero COVID cases. I love Mexico and that would be a great option for us, but the FH wants to go somewhere that we both haven’t been to before!

Totally agree on wanting to visit new places, I literally planned out my whole Europe trip. I was so devastated that I would not be dancing tango on the rooftop of a Spanish home drinking Sangria, or walking the Colosseum in Rome, the vineyards, the food, the people! We decided on Mexico because it was not too far and they were taking good care of everything. Fingers crossed that we get to experience some new places sooner than later!
