Inexpensive, creative card box ideas?

Kari, on April 28, 2021 at 8:25 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 13

We are not having a registry and know most people will bring cards/cash gifts for us, so we want a vessel to collect them in. I hate the idea of spending money on something we will have no use for after the wedding, so would like to find a creative card box or card box alternative that we can repurpose or reuse later OR something inexpensive that we can gift or donate after. Ideally I want it to look a bit nicer than a collapsable cardboard box. Our wedding is small and we are not worried about having anyone steal from the box. I'm not opposed to a little DIY either.

Our venue is a working farm with very modern/contemporary barn (designed specifically for weddings, it's not very "rustic" at all). Decor is pretty simplistic in general - the barn is so pretty it doesn't need much, so aside from some bud vases and flowers, we won't be adding a whole lot.

Any creative ideas about what we can use?

I bought this cute box from etsy. It's a little pricey for the pre painted ones but she also has a diy box to create whatever you want. we'll probably reuse the box again for future baby showers, parties, etc.

I got ours from TJMaxx! It's glass with gold trim and was $7 lol. It's shaped like a house and stands up, so if I don't return it, I plan on putting it on the table near our entryway to hold mail in like bday cards & such!

I am planning on using a real mailbox and then repainting it before installing it on a post at my house (the current mailbox is horrible).

You could easily repurpose an existing cardboard box with paint, ribbon, glitter, etc. Another option is to use a storage basket of some kind with a sign attached that you later use around your house (I have a jute and fabric basket that holds my mail, for example). Target sells ones like these but I am sure you could find one in a color/style/size you like. Draping tulle or other fabric inside and over the edges might also be a cheep way to dress up a container that is close but not quite right. Inexpensive, creative card box ideas? 2

I was on the fence with the card box. I originally wanted to come up with something DIY and cute, but I got to the point where I asked the venue if they had something we could use and they said they had a simple birdcage for cards and I was totally sold with just checking it off the list. One less thing to worry about!

I went to a wedding where the attendant at the sign in table used a tote bag. not sure if that'll be your thing or not because it is really informal and they had a more casual wedding. but i mean it's an alternative if you're looking for it. because you can use the tote bag for anything after!

i think the tote bag was custom though cause i think it had their names or something i don't know

I got mine from Facebook Marketplace. There are a lot of brides who have gotten married, and don't know what to do with all of the leftover stuff from their weddings. I have found lots of decor pieces (and my card box) on there for really cheap! Check it out.

Right after posting this I did a quick run to TJ Maxx just to see what they had. I ended up finding a simple acrylic front card box with a slot at the top that I like quite a bit. It was $20 and doesn't feel too cheap or shoddy and seems comparable to designs that cost twice as much. I was a bit torn between this "Love" design, which had a leafy heart design around it, and one that just said "Cards" and had a design around it that was darker leaves in a circle shape (liked the design of the Love one better but the Cards one seemed a bit easier to repurpose for different events). I took my husband back and we decided to go with this one! I do think the card one is a bit more universal, but feel like at most events where you give cards there is some love involved (baby showers, engagements, anniversaries, etc) so hopefully we can use this down the line or let friends borrow it for future events.

I'm so glad you found this!!! That's perfect for a wedding, and future events since it says 'love' on it! Great find!

I actually went to TJMaxx last night and found those plastic diamond ring shot glasses for only $5! Showed them to my bridesmaids and they said get them because that was the cheapest one we've found so far!
