Beginner August 2016

Inexpensive and Zika free

Caryl, on May 11, 2016 at 6:21 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 33

So we are getting married in August and taking a honeymoon is a MUST for me (philosophies on time alone to decompress and bond etc.). Here's what I'm looking for: somewhere where we can relax for a couple days, and then be active for a couple days. We can't afford a lot ($3000 max including airfare), and we plan on starting a family within a year, so anywhere with Zika is out (so basically all of South America, Caribbean, and southern US - if it spreads). Soooo, I was thinking west coast, Rockies, or Canada? Anyone have recommendations? (flying out of Wisconsin/Chicago)

I'm not sure if you have ever been to Las Vegas. It is awesome. There is so much to do there.

Go on Pinterest, that will give you tons of ideas of fun things to do there.

I would also love to do a tour of the east coast states, that might be something you might be interested in.

Go to California! Lots of places to be active but also relax. Or Colorado. It's beautiful there.

How about Banff? There's also Blue Mountain or Mont-Tremblant.

Montreal? august is prime time to be here. still festival season, weather is stil hot and you really don't have know french if you stay in the tourist areas. most people speak english. you could rent a car and explore the eastern townships or mont tremblant as mentioned above. both are really beautiful.

vancouver is really beautiful too. I lived there for a few months and there's this awesome contrast of an urban city surrounded by nature. Stanley Park is beautiful, especially the stretch along the ocean near the lion's gate bridge and the trees! also, best sushi and indian restaurants in canada, handsdown. and kitslano beach!!!!

I just read an article from the CDC that said that the mosquitoes that carry Zika are not found in destinations with very high altitudes. But if you are pregnant or considering it, it's best to check with a doctor before making any travel plans.

I've not been, but I've heard Quebec City is wonderful and feels like being in France. You could easily also stop in Montreal as part of that trip.

Colorado or Utah if you want to be active. There is some amazing hiking to be done in those states. Or Vegas, since the grand canyon is a day trip from there.

I recommend Vancouver Island in British Columbia (I'm partial because I'm from there and getting married there this summer) but you can have mountains, oceans, old growth forests and a lot of charm with lots to see!

If you don't want to go that far west then Banff or Jasper in Alberta are also beautiful!

We live in Seattle and are trying to do our honeymoon somewhere close. Top 3 choices right now are Vancouver Island, Vancouver BC, or an Alaskan Cruise! We are also going to check out the Oregon coast this summer- could be a nice option as well

You can actually do a lot with $3k. I am a big bargain shopper when it comes to vacations. Have you looked on Groupon for getaways? Airbnb? VRBO? Kayak.com for flights?

We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon and seriously didn't spend much more than that. We got round trip tickets from Oregon for about $875 total. We stayed in a private condo (airbnb) for 7 days for only $970 (ocean view with instant beach access and a pool) ahhhhhmazing!!! We were able to go snorkeling, golfing, nice dinners, parasailing, massages, shopping, etc..and only spent a little over $1200 the whole week. It can be done if you start now and plan it out right.

    And no Zika in Hawaii.

I have a personal affinity for Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Yellowstone National Park. You can hike, white-water raft, horseback ride, canoe, ride the ski-life up to the top of the mountain to take in the scenery...and it is a stunning place to kick back and relax too. Jackson Hole is small so we find it really romantic...it's not in the same vein as going to a place like Vegas which is hopping with a thousand people all of the time.

Vegas is fine, I've been there several times, and if you want to keep busy with shows, drinking, gambling, shopping, eating you're fine. If you can't keep busy with the expensive show tickets, it's easy to get bored there too. I can only handle a couple days there at most.

I have a couple friends who travel to the Smoky Mountains (Gatlinburg) every year and it looks amazing. That would be especially inexpensive for you, I think, in terms of flight tickets. There's a bride here on WW that is getting married there too....can't remember her name off the top of my head though.

$3k is a lot for a HM! We did a 7-day cruise for less than that. I would look into Hawaii, or what about Niagara Falls and maybe Toronto?

I would definitely recommend Banff. Jasper is also really nice, slightly less touristy than Banff. It'll be an awesome exchange rate for you, too!

A couple people mentioned Montreal so I figured I'd comment. It tends to get a little cooler towards the end of August here. The days are still warm but you'll definitely need a sweater at night.

Old Montreal (the Old Port) is beautiful. That's where I'm getting married... but it's tiny. Mont Tremblant is about 2 hours away and Quebec City is one or two more (not the same direction though).

Montreal has a great nightlife, but you'll mostly be walking around the streets. Quebec City doesn't have much of a nightlife but again, it will be mostly walking around, visiting touristy places.

If you're a foodie, it doesn't get better than Montreal. We have so many AMAZING restaurants and bars/gastro-pubs.

If you are considering Canada, British Columbia (Vancouver/Canmore) is absolutely stunning.

@Jess aren't most of the festivals over by the end of August?

Sunriver, Oregon. I live here, but it's a resort town with lots to do. About 30 minutes from an actual city. Beautiful forests and mountains around us. I love living here.

Although there are Zika patients in FL, they all caught it in their travels -- not here.

Vermont is beautiful that time of year. Though expensive to fly into, because it's a small airport. I'd recommend flying into boston, and driving to VT.
