Indiana brides and alcohol

Kylie, on March 6, 2016 at 6:19 PM Posted in Indiana Planning 0 13

Hey ladies.

We are having a barn wedding this September. One of the major selling points of our venue was the flexibility it came with. We could choose our own catering, bring in our own alcohol , etc.. Earlier this week we got a letter in the mail stating there had been an addendum to our contract. So instead of being able to bring in our own alcohol and have a licensed bartender serve it we now have to hire an alcohol catering service, which is obviously going to be way more expensive. Originally my dad was just buying up all the alcohol and we already know a bartender. Apparently it's a law , and has been a law, but the lady running our venue is just finding this out? My question to you ladies in Indiana, were any you able to bring in your own alcohol or ran into this problem. We are still doing all the research we can as its a major shock 6 months out then we will have to spend maybe thousands more on alcohol.

I'm from Indiana and I've never heard of that, but I did see many venues we looked at that required extra insurance and the licensed bartender if you brought in your own alcohol. It sounds to me like your venue has changed its requirements and not that state of Indiana? I would definitely look into it further. Good luck!

Not from Indiana but you could always call the alcohol department (ours is ABC, looks like yours is ATC?) and ask - http://www.in.gov/atc/

My venue doesn't require a licensed bartender unless you are doing hard liquor. My catering staff will be sticking around to bartend for our beer and wine. I'm in MN though. Your best bet would be calling like Stephanie suggested though. Just to be on the safe side.

We already have to pay for insurance for the reception. And originally they said we have to have a licensed bartender which is fine, but now we have to buy the alcohol from an actual company. It's annoying. My friend got married this summer and was allowed to buy her alcohol from wherever and bring in her own licensed bartender.. We called the excise police number and the lady said it was the law.. I will get in contact with the other people too. Thanks ladies!! Smiley smile

We live in Indiana and are getting married at a barn too. We can have our own alcohol as long as the bartenders are licensed and carry their own insurance. We do have to fill out several permits but it's not a law that you absolutely HAVE to go through a caterer....

I think it's a venue change. Our venue required we have alcohol provided by our caterer but I know other places you just had to have a licensed bartender but could provide your own liquor from somewhere like SAMs club or Costco.

Indiana here! Our venue (state park inn) requires we buy it through them and they'll bartend. We can get whatever we want, so that's nice. It sounds like it's a venue thing. Not sure though.

When I was venue searching a lot of venues had the rule that you must purchase alcohol through them and they needed a licensed bartender however I did find a venue that you can bring your own! Good luck!

To serve liquor you have to use a catering company in Indiana. For beer and wine you would apply for a temporary beer and wine permit. It's 50 dollars and you have to have a licensed bartender to serve.
