Iceland Honeymoon

Brandeana, on June 19, 2019 at 8:48 AM Posted in Honeymoon 1 8
So the Fiancé and I are considering a honeymoon in Iceland in March, but we don't know where to start.

Our experience with traveling is all inclusive in the Caribbean, so trying to figure out a honeymoon package on our own have us clueless.

Are any of you planning a trip? We would love to have thermal pools as a main point in our trip, as well as Northern lights - which we read can still potentially be seen in March.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

We are looking into getting a travel agent. Most of them don't charge fees as they get kickback from you purchasing your trip. I found an travel agency I liked (she required a deposit but it went towards your trip once you booked), but we are also looking into using the travel services that are built into either our American Express or Chase credit cards. Any travel agent should be asking you what you're looking to get out of the trip/do while you're there and should personalize your trip!

How long are you going for and what time of year? I did a quick 5 day trip last October. We flew in on a red eye flight and went straight to the blue lagoon. From there, we mostly used Reykjavik as our base, doing day trips from there. One day we did a guided tour and one day we drove ourselves out to Vic (I think - along the southern route), seeing various waterfalls and black sand beaches along the way. We did one overnight outside of town along a different route.

Unfortunately we didnt see the Northern Lights - they didnt make an appearance our entire trip! The people are friendly and the food was surprisingly good! It is expensive but one of the most beautiful countries I've ever been to!

Wow my fiancé and I are also looking at doing our honeymoon in Iceland! While I haven't done any concrete planning yet I have been looking into doing self driving tours around the country and that seems like something that might fit your desire to go see thermal pools.
So my first tip would be decide if you want to travel around the island or stay in closer area so you can stay in one hotel the whole time and then from there you can research which thermal pools you want to see as well as other attractions and go from there. Based on my experience travelling around Europe last summer it's definitely good to have a loose itenerary for this kind of sightseeing trip so you don't do a bunch of stuff you want to in the first few days and realize you have 3 days of your trip left and have done everything in the area that interested you and aren't prepared to travel to any other areas.
Hopefully this helps get you started, I haven't really delved into planning our trip yet so I don't have a ton of Iceland specific tips or knowledge to share but if you have any more general trip planning questions I can help you answer those

I'd definitely recommend talking to a travel agent. We did a multi-day layover in Iceland, staying in Reykjavik and going to Blue Lagoon, driving the Golden Circle (a day-trip type route that takes you to geysers, waterfalls, and other scenic spots), rode Icelandic horses, and just kicked around downtown. Most of the people in Iceland live in Reykjavik, so that's a good central spot. If you're up for a little more adventure, there's a route around the whole country that you can drive and camp/stay in cabins to see glaciers and bigger and better sights than those close to the big city. There are also lots of tour groups who will take small groups on week long trips to hike glaciers, ride the local horses, etc. My biggest recommendation is to pack warm. We were prepared for the temperatures, but while boarding the plane learned that it's one of the windiest places in the world, so the wind chill makes it feel a lot colder.

I also recommend a travel agent! Let them put together a nice package for you based on your interests. You should be able to find one that costs you nothing - check out AAA or Costco if you can't find one elsewhere.

Thank you so much, I'll talk to my Fiancé about looking for a travel agent. We may have to look for two. He's Canadian and I'm American so we'll try to see which place can get us a better deal (probably Canada, traveling out of Montréal).

We're actually going to Iceland next April for our honeymoon!

We have a travel agent and she booked everything for us, but this is the actual tour we're doing:

If you know how to scope out really good deals, you could honestly plan this by yourself if you plan on going through a tour company (like G Adventures or Contiki, etc.). I always tell people that if you're not with a tour group (ie need to plan how to get from point A to B to C to D, etc.) it can be way less stressful if you hire a travel agent and let them scope out the best route for you that lets you maximize your time and potentially save a good amount of money! Our travel agent ended up savings us $400 in airline tickets because of a couple deals she found!

Our travel agent charges $35 per adult and I'm terrible at planning things so IMO the $70 we pay her to plan the trip is 110% worth it!
