Iberostar Grand (Mexico) vs. Secrets Maroma Beach (Mexico)...which is better??

Gina, on February 2, 2011 at 11:39 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 6

Hello, my fiance and I are planning our honeymoon for the first week in May. We have it narrowed down to 2 all-inclusive resorts in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The reviews on both are outstanding and it seems that either choice will be amazing. However, have any of you been to either of these places, and have a preference? The Iberostar Grand is about $300 more expensive than Secrets Maroma for similar quality room view (ocean view). I hear the pool is better at Iberostar, yet the Beach is better at Maroma. Iberostar you get to go to their 2 other neighbor properties to eat/swim, ect. However, my fiance hates the fact that you MUST make dinner reservations at Iberostar, whereas you just walk up to any reastuarant and eat at Secrets...if there is a wait it's just like any normal restaurant, you wait. What are your thoughts??? Thank you so much!!! Smiley smile

I haven't been to either of those, but I have been to another in Mexico, and loved the fact that we didn't have to have dinner reservations. The only thing was the beach was nice, but there was a lot of seaweed on some days. So if I were you, I would go with what is more important to you.

I haven't been to Mexico, but I did do Iberostar Punta Cana and was very pleased with the resort and the food!

We've been to both! My husband and I honeymooned at Secrets Maroma, and just got back from the Grand a couple days ago. Our preference was easily Secrets. We felt the food was far superior, the beach was better, and the resort was better laid out and more attractive. The Grand really lacked in the food department; we expected much better quality and selection. The next door resorts and restaurants are not even worth going to because they are so inferior to the Grand. The food just wasn't up to snuff...and no Mexican restaurant either like at Secrets. Of the Grand restaurants, we liked the Japanese one the best, but at Secrets we loved all of them. The Grand did amazingly include golf and the course was fantastic. We did not golf while at Secrets. The rooms and bathrooms, we felt, were a lot nicer at Secrets. Very well decorated, and just of a higher quality. The minibar was better at Secrets too... Smiley smile Good luck and congrats!

One last thing, reviewing your questions above...

The "reservation" thing at the Grand is a joke. Upon arrival, we were told that all the restaurants were completely booked. We were fuming. Yet when passing by them in the evening, we noticed that most (like 80%) tables were open. So we asked the hostess if we could eat (and after consulting a manager or something) allowed us to eat without a reservation. At Secrets, no reservations are required, and we never had to wait long for a table.
