Hurricanes in New Orleans

User2574599655703, on April 18, 2020 at 9:16 AM Posted in Louisiana Planning 0 3
Hey, y’all! I am having a 100% domestic destination wedding in New Orleans. We have less than 50 people coming. Our original wedding date was TODAY, but we postponed until June 20th. Now that date is looking bleak...

In my mind, I really do not think there is any possibility to get married in the fall this year due to 1) the popularity of weddings in New Orleans in the fall and 2) hurricanes. I really, really do not want to push the wedding to 2021. However, I’ve looked at the weather data and New Orleans has been hit by its worst hurricanes in the late summer and fall.
Am I over exaggerating my fear of a hurricane threatening my wedding if we moved it to the fall? Or should I just accept that I need to move it to 2021?

I postponed my destination wedding in the Caribbean and had the same hurricane concern in the Fall. I wouldn’t risk it unless you have the nerves that can handle the anxiety of hurricane season + a pandemic. I can’t! I COMPLETELY understand not wanting to postpone until 2021 when you’re so close to getting married, but I think it’s the only choice we have.

Hi Jerri! It looks like despite the storm potential, September & October are the most popular months to get married in New Orleans! Probably because the temperature is much cooler than the summer months.

End of August is the peak of hurricane season - but obviously nasty storms can happen whenever unexpectedly! As a Hurricane Matthew bride myself, I think everyone should always have an indoor backup plan. 😉

As a New Orleanian born and raised, after mid-October you will almost never see a hurricane that requires drastic measures! You should be absolutely fine hurricane-wise in November. Also if you have any difficulty coordinating your vendors for that time, I am having to postpone my wedding from November 21 of this year to 2021 because half of my family is out of the country and international travel restrictions may still be in effect at that time. I LOVE my vendor team, and I more than recommend them to anyone - also happy to speak more to my experience with them if you have any questions!
