How We Saved $1,900 On Our Honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico

Karla, on June 11, 2019 at 1:14 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 11

When we were planning our honeymoon trip, we wanted an option that would not break the bank and was a beautiful tropical destination where we could relax. I decided to get 2 travel credit cards because that waived the foreign transaction fees that we would incur when traveling outside the U.S.

With both credit cards, I paid off all vendors for the wedding and in turn we got the following for free.

-Round-trip airfare on Jetblue for 2 Orlando-Cancun, MX

-Private direct transportation to and from our hotels in Mexico

-2 tickets for Chichen-Itza Premium tour with double-decker transportation from and back to our hotel, unlimited beer and tequila sunrise, full lunch buffet, swimming in a cenote, tequila museum, Chichen-Itza guided tour (Seven Wonder of the World) and more.

-2 day admission to Xplor and Xhel-Ha ecological parks with all day food and beverages included.

- $700 hotel credit that we used towards our bill at the Ritz-Carlton, Cancun.

Please let me know if anyone has any questions.

I'm happy to help!

Sure thing! It was free money because our credit card bills were always paid in full by the due date. We didn't spend money that we didn't have, just used our wedding budget.

    Hello Wendy!

    The two credit cards:

1.) Chase Sapphire: When you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months of opening your account, you receive 60,000 bonus points. When you redeem those points through the Chase Travel portal that is the equivalent of $750. In addition to that, you receive 1 point for each $1 spent. 2 points for every dining or travel purchase.

This card is for very good or excellent credit scores and it take a while to hear back about the approval.

It is a nice metal card, no foreign transactions fees, annual fee of $95.

If you rent a car, you can waive the rental insurance as it is covered for free with this card.

I have added the link below to apply.

2.) Capital One Venture: When you spend $3,000 in the first 3 months of opening your account, you receive 50,000 bonus points. You can purchase any flight, any hotels and use your points with purchase eraser to eliminate the transaction from your bill. So you are not limited to any specific airline or hotels. In addition to that, you receive 2 points for each $1 spent and that is on anything! A huge plus with this card is you get $100 credit to cover the application fee of TSA Pre or Global Entry which is good for 5 years. This card requires excellent credit and also has a $95 annual fee, no foreign transaction fees.

Great tips! We use the Sapphire Reserve card and paid for our honeymoon flights (flew into Puerto Rico for our cruise) with it, as well as 2 nights in a hotel for a friend's wedding. We also are using our points for a trip to Riviera Maya this November. We will have plenty of point left over for a trip to Jamaica next year, and then the year after, we're going to do Napa! We'll be able to use point for all of these flights. We only redeem the credit card points for airfare or hotel (and we always book through the portal) because we feel like that gets us the most bang for our buck. Like you said, it is free money if you pay it off at the end of the every month!

Wow that is amazing!! All the travel. I wish more people knew that travel cards can be such a great tool if you use them correctly and pay them off in full. I love the perks.
