How to do makeup for wedding

Katie, on May 17, 2019 at 7:04 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 12

Hi Ladies! I am planning on doing my own hair and makeup (we're getting married in a very small town in VA, and it's just going to be easier to do myself than trying to hunt somebody down!), but I have very little makeup experience. Did anybody else do a trial at Sephora or another makeup store? Did it help figuring out what to do? How much did you practice before the day, and how much time did it take on the day? Any and all advice about DIYing it would be much appreciated!

I am diying my makeup for the wedding. I went to sephora this week just to see how they would do the same style that I did. I liked my application wayyyy better. It was nice because she taught me how to contour.

I’ve watched several tutorials online from people who I like their make-up looks and I’m planning to go to Sephora or ultra before my wedding shower to see if I can get any more tips and try out a look. I’d like to wear false lashes on the day and have only ever worn them twice (for small amounts of time because they bothered me), so I’d like to at least learn the best application techniques. I wouldn’t try to do anything super dramatic myself because I think it’s too easy for me to go overboard and look ridiculous. I plan to just practice my look several times and time myself so I get a feel of how long I should allow.

Go on youtube to watch follow along with the tutorials!! i would suggest practicing at least once a week until you get it perfect! i’ve gotten my wedding day makeup down to 35 minutes (and that’s really taking my time, i could do it in about 15) and i’ve been doing updos on my self for a few years so i can do that quite quickly as well. practice definitely makes a huge difference!!

I start with moisturizer and primer then concealer for under eyes and blemishes, foundation, more concealer (if necessary) then cream contour and highlight. then i set my whole face with translucent powder, add more under my eyes and t zone to “bake”. while that sets i do my eye brows, clean them up with concealer, do a soft brown smokey eye with a slight winged eyeliner and fake lashes. then i use a powder contour and then brush away any translucent powder. i go on the cheek bones and up slightly with blush and add highlight on the tip of my nose, cupid’s bow and the high cheek area. then add my lipstick and setting spray.

I will be doing my own makeup as well. I decided to learn to do my own makeup better a few years ago. I learned everything I know from YouTube videos. It only took a handful of times following the tutorials to get the basics down. From there, I experimented with other things I liked. Depending on how long you have until your wedding, I would practice it once a week or every couple weeks. I’m a over a year out from my wedding and will be practicing the specific look I want once a month. I do need to start also timing myself to get a better idea of that. You can totally do it!

Haha, thanks for the encouragement! Unfortunately, I only have about 5 weeks until my wedding, but I’m only thinking of doing a basic, natural-as-possible look.

I used to work at Sephora and had quite a few brides who wanted to DIY it. We would have an appointment and I would explain everything step by step and draw a face chart with directions they could follow. Now there is an app they can take photos as they do your makeup and email you the directions and products used! A few of my brides who did it themselves came back and showed me the pics and it came out amazing! One thing to keep in mind is you need a bit more color than you would normally use because too natural or light of a color will get washed out in pics. Take pics with your phone using flash etc and indoor/outdoor lighting and you will be able to see what needs a bit more color. I think it’s a great idea to at least try a free mini makeover so you can find products that will work for your wedding. For example a lot of people didn’t know that too much powder or certain type of powders will show up in flash photos and majority of products with SPF will also show up and make you look ghostly (flashback).

I was playing around on the WeddingWire YouTube and I'm a little embarrassed to admit I didn't know how many cute makeup tutorials are in there! I wish I had had them when I DIYed my wedding makeup, I hope they help someone else who is trying to deal with wedding day makeup ideas
