How much weight lose is too much after buying a dress?

Taylor, on January 12, 2022 at 1:19 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 6
So basically my dilemma is that I just bought my wedding dress last week. I’m not getting married until October but obviously I couldn’t wait much longer to get a dress especially with how long it’s taking to get them in. My problem is that I have lost 25 pounds since March. I am nervous that if I drop down a size or two between now and the wedding then I won’t be able to get my dress altered to fit. At what point should I stop trying to lose weight to not cause me a problem

I’m not a seamstress, but everything I’ve seen says most dresses can be taken in about 2 sizes. You can check with your seamstress to make sure. For me, that’s about 25 to 30 lbs, but may be me or less for you depending on your height and how you carry your weight. But you can check your designers size chart and track your measurements to be sure you don’t lose too much.

Check with them when you order. If you know you plan to lose X more pounds then they can order a size or two down to prepare for the loss. I lost 12 pounds after I ordered mine and it still fits.

A lot of this depends on the style of dress you got. Some dresses can be taken in or let out a considerable amount (i’ve seen brides on this forum successfully take in a dress more than four sizes); while other dresses (like mine, unfortunately) cannot be altered up or down at all. Did you speak to the sales associate about your weight loss journey? If so, hopefully they helped you choose dresses that they knew could be easily altered. If not, you may want to call the boutique you purchased your dress from to see if they can give you guidance. I would ask their alterations department how many sizes the dress could be safely altered down to, and whether a corset back would be an option if needed.

All dresses can be taken in a certain amount. You could also think about seeing how many lbs it takes you to fluctuate a size and maybe only plan on getting one size down then maintaining. Depending on the back closure you might fit in the same size. Wedding dresses are usually sized to fit kinda snug anyway.

The good thing about your dress, is that there doesn't appear to be anything that would have to be moved for a serious altering (IE lace, crystals etc) and the multiple darts and seam points actually make it easier to alter, especially at the top - the multiple darts around your bust area in particular are helpful.

I would talk to them further, but based solely on the style, alterations shouldn't be too difficult. I can't tell from the photo if your top is fully corseted (ie has boning) that may be more of a hassle to deal with if you significantly change size, but could also still easily be worked with.

As a side note, I think you look great! Do what feels best for you but don't force anything to fit a standard. You'll look amazing no matter what size you are on your wedding day!
