How much did you spend on a Dj?

Brittney, on July 20, 2020 at 6:54 PM Posted in Planning 1 29
Hey everybody,
My boyfriend and I are planning our wedding for end of next year and I’m trying to work on a budget. We’re both very very new to wedding things, so I just wanted to see what the average price for a DJ was. Our reception will probably be around 5 hours. Thanks!

Price is 100% dependent on your location. Browse the vendor tab and get price quotes locally. A large city will be more expensive than a small town.

Our DJ cost around $4,500..but he's pretty much rated the best DJ in Maryland by several websites so it will be worth it.

About 2000 for 6 hours, but I got quotes as high as 4300. Depends on how exciting you want it, lights, dance floor, MC ect

This, absolutely. And this advice goes for all of your vendors. You will be far better informed and much less frustrated if you don't try to compare prices in other places that aren't relevant to your location. Also be sure you get sufficient details to compare apples to apples when you get quotes. Vendors have different packages and provide a wide variety of services and levels of service.

Our DJ is $3800 for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. This also includes uplighting, monogram lighting, and sparkler and cloud special effects for the first dances. We agreed that we were willing to splurge for this particular dj because he is above and beyond all others in the area and feel that the music sets the tone for the entire night!

I Second this completely. Even comparing vendors where I live with vendors 2 hours away where we’re getting married was different.

Also, base your budget on what you can afford, not what the average cost is. If you can only afford $5000, decide what is most important and put your budget towards those aspects, and either cut or find creative alternatives for the other areas. For example, we knew where we wanted to get married immediately, but also knew venues were going to be way more than we could afford so we looked for non-traditional our-of-the-box location’s we could use.

I found my DJ on thumbtack and in Chicago area for ceremony (30 minutes) plus reception (5 hours) it’s $750. No light, no photo booth.

I believe we paid $350. We know someone who’s brother in law does it professionally on the side. I also checked out Thumbtack and got quotes $500+ they were from at least an hr away. I live in Nashville so everything is crazy expensive here. I had to dig and kind of think outside the box a little to find deals.

Do research here, on Google, try thumbtack, check out friends hobbies (you might find out surprising things about the people you know), attend wedding shows just keep looking until you find someone you like who fits your budget. And don’t forget to meet them in person to interview them before you hire them. Just because they got your budget doesn’t mean they’re the right vendor for you.

I’m in Connecticut and our DJ was $900 and that includes ceremony, reception, and uplighting. He was one of the cheaper options though, a lot of the people we were seeing wanted $2k+.
