How much cake do we need?

Jasmine S., on January 7, 2022 at 11:31 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 9
Hi all, I finally decided how to handle the cake situation for my wedding! We will have a small decorated cake for the bride and groom to cut, then serve sheet cake to the guests. There will also be other desserts provided such as popsicles, pretzels, mini tarts, etc. We expect about 160 guests -- does that mean we need 160 servings of cake, or could we get away with less because there will be other desserts? I'm especially interested in hearing from people who are already married or have been to a lot of weddings! How many people actually ate your cake? Was there much left over at the end of the night?

I would honestly plan on 160 pieces of cake if there are 160 people (including vendors, you and your fiance, wedding party, etc) - sometimes people don't want a piece, but I think it's better to have enough for everyone and have leftovers, rather than everyone actually wanting a piece of cake, and not having enough.

I feel like a lot of weddings I've been to didn't serve cake haha. The couple cuts one for the tradition of it, and then other desserts are served. We are doing a small 2 tier cake for cutting and then sending the bottom layer home in boxes with the wedding party members/family, and then we are taking the top layer home.

Like PP said, if you want to serve cake, I would plan for about the number of guests you have just to be sure everyone can have one that wants one

I would go with 160 servings. Every wedding I've ever been to, everyone is served cake and then they go up to the dessert table for other various treats. Most people I've seen eat the cake.

I used to work as a catering server, and I have noticed that the more choice/variety there is, the more options people will take. So, lots of people will want to try the cake, the mini tarts, and all the rest. Wedding cake servings are typically pretty small (ask your baker for specifics). Much smaller than people are used to serving themselves from a homemade birthday cake, for instance.

This was our cake at our wedding with around 110 guests. We, of course, saved the top layer to eat on our anniversary, but we also had around 20 (big) leftover pieces! Are you using a caterer? They’ll probably be able to have a good idea! There’s a chance not everyone will eat cake, but you’d rather have a bit more than not enough.

Your bakery, even if you use Sam's or something, should be able to help you with figuring out exactly how much you need. It also depends on the size of the pieces you are wanting. You can probably get away with smaller pieces since you have more options.

I would have at least 1 serving of cake per guest. Some will have 2 slices and others won’t have any so it balances out. Make sure that any food/dessert you have is 1 serving per guest. There is nothing worse than when someone says “___ is awesome so you need to try it!” and it disappears as soon as it’s set out because the couple only ordered for 1/4 of the guests.

Plan on 160 slices/servings and provide boxes for folks to take a slice or some of the other treats with them.
