How involved were you in the ring?

Andrea, on January 8, 2024 at 4:34 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 12
I’m just curious how many people were involved in the selection of your ring? And if you helped pick the ring, how much did you know about the upcoming proposal?

Both were a surprise for me. We’d talked generally about rings — not “I want XYZ” but window shopping and pointing out something I liked or saying I didn’t like rings that were too high profile and snagged things. The ring ultimately wasn’t what I would’ve chosen on my own, but I love seeing how my comments and his taste fit together!
I’d suspected a proposal might be coming, because we traveled to Europe for my parents’ 50th anniversary and were going to a place of great personal significance to us. (Scarborough, England, when we met as actors at Scarborough Faire ren Faire) But that very morning, I gave myself a stern talking to about not expecting anything and then getting disappointed if it didn’t happen. So it was a genuine surprise when he pulled out a ring! 😆

We picked the ring out together and took it together to the jewelry store to get resized. My fiance picked it up a few days before we flew out to Texas to visit my parents, but I didn’t know if he was bringing it with him or waiting til we got back.

In Texas, we went to see my favorite basketball team, the Miami Heat, play against the San Antonio Spurs. Both FH and I are big basketball fans. When we were entering the arena and going through security, he had to empty his pockets and put everything in a dish and I saw the ring box!!! 😱🥰
We are not the type for scoreboard proposals, so I was a little confused how he was going to do it. Right after halftime we went to go get Tex Mex and he found a quiet corner of the concourse and popped the question there. We went back to our seats and told my parents, who attended the game with us. It was wonderful! And the Heat also came back from an 18 point deficit to win the game lol.

Btw, I gave myself the same stern talking-to about not expecting a proposal when we were on vacation lol. No expectations are better - it allows you to be surprised by life!!

We decided to get married when discussing some big career/educational changes. I wasn’t expecting a ring at all since we agreed to get engaged mutually. He surprised me with a ring a week later that I knew nothing about. My mom works in jewelry wholesale so she helped him pick out a ring.

My proposal was a complete surprise! He and I went to his jeweler after the proposal, where he let me design my own ring. I really appreciated it since I am not really a “jewelry girly”, and if I am going to wear some thing every day I want it to be something I absolutely love

My husband totally surprised me with the proposal! He picked out the original ring by himself (I had no clue that he was even looking at rings), and then a few weeks after the proposal, we went ring shopping together.

I was super specific with what I wanted, so FH had me design my own ring! The proposal was still a surprise, though I suspected he was going to propose after he changed our anniversary plans

While I had my suspicions about the weekend and we had talked in the abstract about ring styles I like, the proposal was a surprise and I had no involvement with the ring purchase. H picked the ring up a few days before.

We had spoken many times over the years about what type of ring I would like. I'm not a big jewelry person so he would ask lots of questions and show me examples of different rings. When he did propose it was EXACTLY what I had pictured with the addition of the main stone being my favorite color (purple). So it was even better than I had imagined and now I don't even want a wedding band because I love my engagement ring so much lol Smiley ring

Totally uninvolved, which is surprising because that’s so not me. His mom offered him a number of heritage pieces and he said this one “felt like me” and I couldn’t agree more. I love it so much. It’s not at all how I would’ve done it and I’m so glad no one asked me!How involved were you in the ring? 1

Your proposal story is so sweet!!! Similarly for my partner and I, we knew we wanted to get engaged and had discussed rings generally, but no specifics. So the proposal and the ring were quite the surprise for me. It is not a ring I would have chosen for myself either, but after he explained all his thoughtful reasons for choosing this particular one, I really do love it. (P.S. I also gave myself the "no expectations, no disappointment" talk during the drive to one of our old college haunts where he did, indeed, propose - haha)
