How did you pick your fine china?

Michelle, on November 15, 2022 at 11:56 AM Posted in Registry 0 9

After ~3 years in the pandemic and a home refresh, I'm ready to host a smaller dinner party (4-6 persons). I plan to use my china everyday because I'm not waiting to feel special. Suggestions? TIA.

My guidelines:

- dishwasher safe, no metal trim

- not a limited edition style. Maybe I'll want a gravy boat in a few years.

- serious talk with the husband on being gentle

* We opted out of pre-wedding parties, so did not have a registry. Plus, we had all the home necessary items.

Forgot to add, we're married already so we will pay for this out of pocket. Thanks for recommendations.

Anthropologie has some great options, although you may be harder pressed to find items that will be available for long periods of time.

I would look at pieces that are “open stock.” Crate and Barrel has tons of styles in open stock, meaning you can buy what you want/need and then buy that gravy boat or extra plates or whatever over time.

Also wanted to add: I would probably go for something more neutral. That way you can dress up the table scape with flowers/colored napkins and other decor stuff depending on the party or theme. Like a class white with maybe a little bit of something is much more versatile than something with a distinct pattern.

    We got these:

Have been using them every day (for the most part) for 5+ years and they're still in really great condition.

Maybe this is why I'm inspired to go patterns. So pretty. I will look into these for colorful dessert plates if I do go with a neutral set. Thank you.

You make great points, thank you. I love a detailed tablescape, but am still learning how to mix and match patterns and colors. I think I feel adventurous with every big holiday, but do I want to invest in red plaid Ralph Lauren all year round?

Thank you, Becky. These are very pretty, and I do appreciate a colored stonewear. However, I am searching for the dainty dinnerware that back in the day people reserved for special occasions. I want to use them everyday though because I only have funds and room to store one set. Smiley smile

I figured as much, but thought I would include them, since you indicated you were looking for something a little sturdy.

I have one set of fancy china that is (reasonably) sturdy - but I don't much use them, since they're probably full of lead (my grandmother's neighbor gave me them). My other set was my mom's wedding china - and it has silver on - and is definitely not sturdy lol.

It may behoove you to go to a department store (always hate to recommend going to the store lol) and just see what they have that you like. A friend of mine got hers at Belk.
