How cold is too cold for outdoor ceremony?

Rebecca, on October 22, 2023 at 12:25 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 13
I'm getting married in less than a week and really really want the ceremony to be outside. The forecast is for 50 degrees and partly cloudy. Is that too cold? There is a space to have it indoors if we have to but it's less than ideal.

Your biggest priority should be the comfort of your guests. With no other heat source, IMO that is going to be too cold for all but your most warm blooded guests. Even mid 60s would be chilly all dressed for a wedding unless the sun is out. 50 and cloudy or with any wind is going to feel even colder.

FWIW, I went to a cookout last weekend with temperatures in the mid-50s and overcast. Even wearing jeans and and coat, it was not the most comfortable, and I was glad to have a beanie and gloves.

50s seems a little chilly for people to be sitting outside at a ceremony, dressed for a wedding. Are you OK with people wearing hats/coats in your ceremony photos? Do you plan to setup heaters or provide blankets to help keep people warm? How long will the ceremony be? If the ceremony is short and you plan to provide a way for people to stay warm, guests could meet inside upon arriving at the venue before the ceremony, and then when the ceremony is ready to begin, everyone could go outside at that time. Otherwise, without heaters or blankets, it would probably be better to hold the ceremony inside.

I personally would not enjoy a ceremony in 50 degree weather….unless it was a very short ceremony (15 minutes or fewer) and I had on appropriate outer wear. This is, a “know your crowd” question. Nonetheless, I would think you would be mighty uncomfortable in a wedding gown and 50 degree weather.

Other posters make good points. If the ceremony is short and your guests are aware and have the proper attire, it's not ideal but fine. I wouldn't plan to have people outside for more than 20-30 minutes.

Don't forget you, your partner, and your wedding party (if any) will not be in coats like your guests. What would you think is comfortable for yourself?

50 seems too cold to me. It’s colder when you’re just sitting around, and everyone will be dressier than normal so not really dressed for the weather.

Thanks everyone! We ended up having it indoors and although not exactly what I envisioned, it was still lovely How cold is too cold for outdoor ceremony? 1

Congratulations and beautiful pictures! They/ You set up the room really well with the rug, lanterns, natural light, and beige, boho walls. You can't tell from the room or your faces that you planned another location.

Congratulations! Everything looks perfect. It is good that you had the indoor option available and had the mindset to have the ceremony indoors.
