How are you addressing your Fmil?

Pat, on September 17, 2023 at 11:34 AM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 10

SO... here's a little conundrum for all you brides and newly married gals out there. How do you plan, or how are you actually, addressing your future in-laws? Mom and Dad? Mom -last name and dad-last name? First names? Have you talked to them about this, or mentioned something to you FH? Since I am a (much) older bride, I didn't have this issue this time around, but in previous marriages it was "Mom last-name" and FIL was addressed by his first name (his request)

I have a very close relationship with my in-laws. My husband and I both call our respective in-laws by first name. More often then not though, we don’t really use names at all during regular conversation. So it’s usually more so if trying to get their attention.

My husband and I each call our in-laws by their first names, but we honestly don't use their names too much when talking to them. When his parents send us cards, they usually sign them as "Mom & Dad [last name]", though I couldn't imagine calling them mom or dad.

They introduced themselves to me by their first names back when my fiancé and I started dating. Their SIL and other DIL both call them by their first names, but… Well, I’m old-fashioned. I plan on saying “Mr. and Mrs. (Last Name)” until they tell me otherwise.

I literally do not say their names. They prefer "Mom/Dad" but I would not call my husband's parents that. They are not first name types so I just completely avoid saying their names. It can be done! My husband refers to my parents by their first names because they have always gone by that to him.

When we were introduced my FMIL used her first name and that's what I've stuck with. Sometimes if we're texting I'll refer to her as "Momma Michele" in a funny way, but I didn't grow up with my parents addressing their in-laws as anything other than first names so I think that's why it's stuck too. My fiancé calls my parents by their first names.

I would just ask them what they prefer. I don’t think they would be offended. Good luck!

I’ve used their first names since I met them and don’t plan on changing. I love my FFIL (FMIL sadly passed away just before we got engaged), but I have a dad.

I use my FIL's and step MIL's first names. My MIL is Mama Lastname. My fiance refers to my mom either by her name or by Mama Lastname. My MIL loves the nickname. I asked everyone what they wanted to be called.

Yeah, I just call them by their first names. I interacted with them a lot while we were dating so calling them anything but their first name just seems awkard
