Horrible Experience With Photographer/videographer

My wedding already happened in July last year and I was diligent to pay the photographer on time. It costed me $9000 with a final balance of $500 remaining upon completion of the videos and photos. Since July, I have been communicating via emails, phone calls and whatsapp messages to the photographer and he has not been responsive. When he finally responded back to me, he messaged me saying that he will send the photos within a week. It went on like that for a few weeks since he kept saying that he will send it within "this week" but we never received it.


Finally, I got the photos in January this year and they were disappointing. The skintone of everyone in the photos was white washed and everyone seemed to have the exact same skin tone in every photo. The wedding contract says that the approximate time for photos is 60-90 days. I finally got a hold of the photographer via call this week and mentioned how he has been inconsistent with responding back and that I am not satisfied with the quality of the photos and at this point I don't feel like it is fair to pay $500 for poor work and customer service.

I brought up the contract timeline of 60-90 days and told the photographer that I atleast want to look at the quality of the videos first before I even consider paying the $500 and explained that I honored my part by paying on time.


Photographer said that he absolutely won't do that and joked about how I will atleast get my photos and videos before my 1 year anniversary coming up in July this year. Currently, he has agreed to edit the photos he sent and asked my husband and I to pick out 10 photos from each of our wedding events to send to him for edits and that he will complete it within a week but I am SUPER SKEPTICAL about this. I am mentally drained from this whole situation and need some advice on what I can do moving forward. I genuinely feel like I want to take this to court because I have wasted so much time, energy and gotten emotionally stressed over this for a while.

    If your contract states that you'll have all photos and videos within 60-90 days of the wedding, and it's been almost a year and you haven't gotten your video, then it sounds like your photographer/videographer is breaking the contract. However, since he is currently responding to you and offering to try to make things right, you could continue to work with him before leaving a review or threatening legal action. I would especially keep the legal action as a last resort. First pick out the 10 photos from each event for editing like he suggested, and see if he gets them back to you on time and in a satisfactory edit. If you like the edits, you could ask him to re-edit the remaining photos and video using the same style, and ask him to give you a date of when you'll receive the video. If that deadline passes with no word from him, then at that time, you could remind him of the contract, and tell him that if you don't receive your photos and videos within a week, you will look into legal action. Once you have all photos and videos in your possession, leave reviews for him on Google, Yelp, The Knot, WeddingWire, Facebook, and anywhere else.

    Be careful!!! By continually giving him additional chances, you're forfeiting a lot of your legal remedies. He's already breached the contract on multiple occasions. Send him a written notification of the ways in which he's breached the contract and how you expect this to be remedied. Send via email AND certified mail. Proceed in the most legally strategic manner. No more verbal conversations. EVERYTHING should be in writing going forward.

    Leave him negative reviews on every platform you can explaining the delay, the poor photo quality, and his nonchalant attitude. Post them on WW? The Knot, Google, Yelp, anywhere you can.

    Leave negative reviews on all platforms: Yelp and Google will not remove them at the vendor’s request while TheKnot does, so TheKnot is not a place to post. Consult with a lawyer immediately and stop giving the vendor chances. Some vendors don’t care about the customer. Also make sure to contact your local news stations and ask for the consumer reports advocates as well as getting in touch with your state attorney general. Both of these organizations exist solely to go after bad vendors.
