Honeymoon?

Future Mrs. Lowder, on February 12, 2020 at 3:23 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 6
My FH and I are supposed to spend our honeymoon in Colorado. We’ll be there for about a week (including Christmas Day). My FMIL brought up her concern that we’d be stuck at the airport due to snow. Has anyone had any problems with that there?

You run this risk any time from October to May in Denver. It's not common in December, but it could happen. I've lived in Colorado for 8 years (two towns north of Denver) but spent a lot of time here and I've only had one flight delayed coming back to Denver from San Diego in late March. I would have a tentative plan if you have to cancel or reschedule due to weather. If you do, it would probably be a few hours to a day at most.

Denver native here. You’ll be fine. The city itself rarely gets buried - the mountains get clobbered but usually Denver itself is fine. The snow there also melts super fast (it rarely lasts more than a day).

Forgot to mention - DIA also has a hotel directly attached to it, so if for some reason your flight is cancelled, there’s a nice place to stay. The light rail also goes directly to DIA, so you have alternatives if the roads are bad. Typically December is not when Denver gets the bulk of its snow - usually it gets more snow in Jan, Feb, and March.

We're going to Colorado too for our honeymoon! Flying in ten Denver and renting a car to go to Estes Park for 2 days then Breckinridge for 4 more days. We're going at the end of September and first week of October.

I mean that’s always a risk anytime you travel anywhere in the north in the winter... but flights get cancelled for a lot of reasons other than snow so i don’t think your odds are any worse than any other time of year. I’m from NJ and we get a lot of snow, I’ve traveled plenty in the winter and in the summer and while snow has been an issue once or twice that I can remember, I’ve had a similar proportion of flight delays/cancellations in the summer due to rain or unexplained “mechanical issues”

I used to live in CO. I've been stuck on Thanksgiving. I would recommend giving a few days on either end to get there and back.
