Tampa/Clearwater/St. Pete in FL would get my vote!

Cruise is the answer. Very affordable and fun.

I don't know what the prices would be, but I live in Florida. I love going to the keys off Sarasota: Siesta Key and Longboat Key. Prettiest sand IMO!

Other great places are Amelia Island, St. Augustine, Cocoa Beach, and the Keys/Key West. I have never been but heard great things about Destin.

I second the St. Pete/Tampa area. I am also biased because it is my home, but there is a lot to do here, and an infinite amount of beaches. We have some of the best beaches in the country, and have tons of stuff to do in the area. St Pete is becoming well known for microbreweries and is a foodies dream.

A cruise from Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, Port Canaveral, or Miami would also be pretty cheap. Tampa will have the oldest of the ships since our port is not deep enough to host the newer ships, and the Skyway limits height limits of ships too. So, not sure if that would be of importance to you?

Port Canaveral would also be great because it is about an hour or so from Orlando, so you could hit all the theme parks if you want one day, and Cocoa and Daytona Beach aren't too far away for a beach day either.

ETA: St. Augustine is another great coastal city by Jacksonville. It is quaint and historic, and a 5-10 minute drive to the beach. They also have some of the best B&B's in the state.

I don't know much about California, but everyone who mentioned the Florida locations had great ideas. I live in the Tampa area. I'm partial to St. Pete, Siesta Key and Sanibel. Key West is pretty amazing too.

California has a lot of options. I would recommend a coastal tour, if you have the time.

Start in Carmel, beautiful BnB's; you can take a morning trip to Monterey Bay then slide down to San Simeon and visit Hearst Castle. Spend a night in Cambria/Cayucus and pop over to Paso Robles and do a bit of wine tasting. On your way south pass through Morro Bay (visit the Rock and you can stay at the Inn at Morro Bay - were I got engaged ) Keep moving down San Luis Obispo and visit the mission. Keep going south and finish in Santa Barbara. They have a ton of wine tasting and beautiful buildings to enjoy. Just a heads up, the water along this part of the coast is not the warmest. If you want to lay on the beach and play in the water, I'd start in San Diego and work your way north until you hit Santa Barbara. Be sure to hit Catalina Island.

Florida!!! I live in the Bay area but to me Cali is fun but Florida sounds more like a vacation destination.

I lived in CA for a year before moving to FL. If you like to swim, I found the Pacific to be cold year round. The Gulf is pretty warm year round (maybe 70 in the winter, 90 right now).

I live in Florida too and everyday is like a vacation here! I recommend anywhere on the gulf side as the water is just gorgeous! There are different resort type hotels that offer water activities and such and you can also just relax on the beaches. FH and I are planning a few days at Disney World and then we're going to save up for a big hurrah sometime in 2017, but we're hoping to travel abroad.

Destin, FL. It's absolutely stunning there. Clear water and white sand. It's where I'm getting married!

The Paso Robles/San Luis Obispo/Cambria area has always been a nice, romantic, relaxing getaway for FH and I.

Also, the wineries in Paso are so welcoming and tasty. Cambria has Hearst Castle.

I would absolutely recommend Siesta Key in Florida. My FH and I vacationed there in April and it was the most relaxing & romantic vacation we have been on. We simply enjoyed the beautiful beaches, the great food & each other. It was very affordable. We stayed at Tropical Beach Resorts. I cannot say enough good things! We can't wait to go back.
