Honeymoon stress

Emily, on January 1, 2020 at 6:54 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 14
Hey y’all

I’m planning our honeymoon since we have our hotels/flights locked down. I’m just trying to find things to do. We are going to Italy for three weeks: Florence, Cinque Terre, Venice, Rome, Pompeii.
I’m concerned about how to get around in night cities, Rome, Florence, Venice.
Has anyone ever been? Is the public transportation okay? Any advice is appreciated!!

Walked around and used public trans in all of these (haven't been to Cinque terre but from what I know there is really no public trans there?)
Florence felt very safe, we actually mostly walked - including a 30 min walk to our Airbnb at 2am lol
Venice also felt safe. We used ferries a lot even at night. We also walked off of the beaten path away from the canal. It was very dark. I wouldn't recommend it, it was dumb to do but we ended up walking into a Piazza in the middle of nowhere and hung out w locals till almost morning. It was amazing. Looking back it was pretty stupid haha... So many dark alleys and corners. We got luckyWe took a train to Pompeii from Naples. Scary as everything is covered with graffiti. But if you go during reasonable hours it will be fine there was a ton of tourists w us. I would avoid wandering around Naples at night. That city was beautifully Italian but also so so sketchy. I didn't feel safe there at all.Rome was fine any time of day. Id stick to city center though and trastevere area... I did take a train and a bus a few times there and it was fine. Overall be careful. My phone was stolen from me on the bus. Someone opened a zipper of my purse and took it out. It wasn't even crowded on the bus... They are pros!!!Overall I highly recommend to get a hotel or Airbnb in city center or close walking distance. So u don't have to worry about it

I stayed in Naples for a summer and traveled all around Italy. I walked as much as I could, but buses and metro are very cheap. Omio is a great app for comparing prices of all transportation. I would usually book directly from the app. Flix bus was my favorite way to travel! If you have extra time near Pompeii, I recommend going to Positano or anywhere on the Amalfi Coast. It was my favorite place! I also recommend hiking Mt Vesuvius. It has such a beautiful view from the top! The train to Pompeii is kind of sketchy so be sure to keep an eye on your things. Pickpocketing happens often in Italy, but I never had any problems. You don’t have to plan much for Rome and Florence. All of the main sites will keep you busy! Try to learn a little bit of Italian before you go. The Italians appreciate when you at least try to speak it!

Eat lots of gelato and drink lots of wine! Italy is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. Enjoy!

Also, Termini area (main station) in Rome can be a bit rough day and night! I avoided it altogether

Thanks so much! This helps tremendously!!

Was it easy to navigate? Kind of nervous since everything is in italian😂😂 I’m afraid We’re going to get lost
Also did you stay in Venice or near? Airbnb’s in Venice are more expensive than the surrounding cities!

We stayed on the canal basically in Venice. Can't underestimate the convenience of staying walking distance to everything. I get it you will have to deal with traveling from city to city but once u get to a place, i personally never want to bother figuring out transport.

Rome has excellent public transport - the metro is a bit sketchy (pickpocketing mostly) but fine so long as you’re careful; the buses and trams are good too but it’s also very walkable. What area are you staying in? Highly recommend a day trip out to Tivoli to Hadrian’s Villa and the Villa d’Este - pretty easy on local buses, you don’t need to take a tour or anything (catch the bus at the Ponte Mammalo station). Book the Vatican in advance, it’s worth the effort to climb St Peter’s dome, and if you’re into history the Castel Sant’Angelo is definitely worth visiting.

Venice - absolutely magical after dark! Also very walkable, although you do run the risk of getting lost, but that’s half the charm of the place anyway. You’ll stumble across all sorts of treasures just by wandering Smiley smile we stayed in Santa Croce in an amazing tiny AirBnB which had a roof terrace overlooking the Grand Canal - it’s worth staying on the island simply because it’s so different at night without having to worry about getting back to wherever you’re staying off-island. More expensive, but absolutely worth it in my book. The vaporetti are very good and you should ride the no. 2 line from one end of the Grand Canal to the other. Also, apparently the Secret Itineraries tour of the Doge’s Palace is really good - we wanted to do it but didn’t book in time so missed out, book that early if it interests you. Morano, Burano and Torcello are worth visiting too.

Florence I adored and once again, the city centre is very compact and easily walkable. Take a bus up to the Piazzole Michelangelo at sunset then walk down; if you want to climb the Duomo book early, and if you plan on visiting the Uffizi and Galleria dell’Accademia, book those in advance too or you’ll spend half your day in a queue. There’s also an awesome Leonardo da Vinci Museum where they’ve built replicas of his machines, and a Galileo museum if science is more your thing.

    Thank you for the suggestions!

My FH last name is Florence and we will be in Florence for his birthday, so I am also looking for something special to do! Italy is romantic as is. But is there just an amazing restaurant to try or something absolutely romantic to do?

    Fantastic itinerary!!!

I’m Venice, Florence and Rome I primarily walked. In Venice there are no roads, so you either walk, take a ferry or hire a taxi boat to jet around the canals (or do the gondola). Yes, the gondola is cheesy... but I say go for it and embrace it for what it is! 😁 It does get dark at night in Venice because it’s very dense, but it’s not sketchy. In Rome I think I took a taxi to get to and from two different restaurants a bit further from the city center and took the train maybe twice? Very walkable. Florence is very walkable as well. Like others have said, the only place I felt a bit uneasily walking around at night was Naples. The city center is pretty sketchy in Naples, but I hear some of the suburbs are much better (we just didn’t hear that until after we stayed in Naples city center 😂).

In Florence (and most of Italy, honestly), do make dinner reservations. For some reason it was nearly impossible for us to walk into a restaurant in Florence and find a free table for dinner (this was in October, so not peak travel time). As far as romantic things to do... take a cab up to Piazza Michelangelo in the late afternoon and watch the sun set on Florence, it is absolutely beautiful! If you’d like to splurge on a nice meal, Ora d’Ario is truly delicious. Lunch can be less expensive than dinner, of course. 😊

I never made it to Venice. Sometimes you can find a nice hostel with a private room much cheaper than an Airbnb. I used Hostelworld a lot.

I never had a problem getting around. I got an Italian SIM card so I could use google maps. It was about 30€ for a low amount of data but it worked great! You can also look into “travelers WiFi.” It’s a bit more expensive but it’s unlimited data and works for several devices at once.

I meant to add - there’s a restaurant on the path between Vernazza and Corniglia which has spectacular sunset views. It’s a bit of a climb to get there but well worth it. It’s called Ristorante Bar la Torre - we spent an hour there with a bottle of rosé and the sunset and it was glorious!
