Honeymoon: Jamaica or St. Lucia

Paula, on March 18, 2011 at 10:24 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 24

My FH and I have been looking at Honeymoon locations. We are getting married in July but don't plan on taking our Honeymoon until late October/ early November. We were looking into a Sandals resort in St. Lucia to begin with but when we went to the travel agents and got prices it would be about $2000 to go to a Sandals resort in Jamaica. The resort we were looking at Sandals Grande St. Lucia and Sandals Whitehouse in Jamaica. Has anyone been to those resorts or could tell me if it is well worth the extra money to go to St. Lucia? I am open to suggestions. I just don't want to go to Mexico.

I have not been to St. Lucia but my bff got back and she said she wasn't all that impressed. She travels a lot, usually to Mexico. She said the food on St. Lucia was nothing special and way over priced and that their was not much to do/see in the way of cultural and historical sites.

I have been to Jamaica and really, really enjoyed it..I recommend it!

I've been to jamaica. a friend of mine who got married last year went to st. lucia. my parents & their friends used to frequent st. lucia annually. if you're looking to just stay on the resort to relax then yea, st. lucia is a good way to go. pictures i've seen are beautiful. there's always activities to do at Sandals resorts.

if you're looking to get out of the resort, see the towns... then i say go to jamaica.

some filters that change the price are

    - couples/adult only

    - the specific resort you go to (st. lucia has 3 or 4)

    - etc.

We are staying at the Sandals Grande St. Lucia for our honeymoon in less than 2 months. I haven't been yet, so I can't say much but I hope it is nice. We were deciding between Jamaica and St. Lucia. I have read that St. Lucia is nicknamed the "Hawaii of the Caribbean." This is because it has beautiful beaches as well as volcanoes & mountains that you can hike. The Grande's property is situated on a very thin peninsula so you have the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.

We LOVE Jamaica. We will be taking our honeymoon at Couples Swept AWay, Negril Jamaica in early November. It's not as "sophistacated" and yes i know i spelt that wrong, as a sandals resort, but the food is 10x better and the staff is out of this world! This will be our 2nd time staying at Couples, I wouldn't have it any other way!

Also, if you go on Sandals website they have a breakdown of the different resorts and what type of "personality" each one has (i.e. high energy/active night life, golf/country club feel, laid back/relax, activity based, etc.). It may help you decide. Also, there is a quiz on there that ask you questions about what you enjoy and then recommends which resorts match what you are looking for in your trip. Hope this helps some.

I just realized that my first post did not make a lot of sense. What I was trying to write was that going to St. Lucia was going to cost $2000 more than Jamaica. Is it worth it?

I second the opinion that you should look into Couples resorts in Jamaica. They have two properties in Ocho Rios and two in Negril. They are also all-inclusive, but more is included with Couples than with Sandals. Check out couples.com and see if you like it! It could save you mucho moola!

My hubby and I got married in Montego Bay, Jamaica almost 9 years ago. It was one of the most wonderful weeks of my life!!! I've been dying to go back ever since.

For those who have been to a Couples resort, would you recommend Couples Tower Isle or Swept Away?

Swept Away...it's much more laid back..but you still can party at night. They have activities every night that the entertainment staff provides. My sister and her DH have been to both, and when I asked her what she liked better, she said "hands down Swept away. there is a reason we have been there 4 times and tower isle only once" Paula..if you want to see pictures, I have some on my Facebook that you can see. Or you can check out www.couples.com and talk to other Couple resort lovers. or for reviews plus candid photos from other guests..www.tripadvisor.com put in the resort name at the top and on the right hand side it should have a link to see pictures and you can view all the reviews from other people. Swept away is where we will go for our honeymoon from Nov. 4-11. We LOVE the atriums. NO TV..but it gives you that much more time for each other. Besides, are you really going to want to watch TV? If you do, there is a TV in the sports complex. I drool just thinking about CSA.

We book thru www.allinclusiveoutlet.com if you would like to check prices. Typically they are the cheapest. Another good place is www.cheapcarribean.com If you play your cards right, you should be able to get an Atrium suit for right around $3000 for 8 days, 7 nights, all inclusive plus air. This also includes transportation to and from the airport.

@Paula - CTI and CSA have two different feels so it depends on what you want... I agree with Jessica - you should go to couples.com and head to their message boards. There's a bunch of posts that explain the vibes of each property and since only you know what will suit you best, you can determine then which would work better for you.

We went to the Sandals Halcyon in St. Lucia two years ago and loved the food and the overall service of the resort. We visited the other Sandals resorts on the island and thought they were nicer than the one we were at as far as aesthetics goes. I thought the entertainment could've been better, though.

We are getting married at Sandals Negril in Jamaica. I love St. Lucia, but our family couldn't afford to fly there for only 3 nights for the wedding. I would totally do St. Lucia for a honeymoon though. I had actually asked my TA about flying there from Jamaica after our wedding but it is totally a pain in the *you know what* as you have to fly back to Miami then down to St. Lucia. We are instead going to a different part of Jamaica for our Honeymoon. Shout out to my TA (Jennifer D at www.travelbyvip.com) SHE was able to get us a huge upgrade for our honeymoon! LOVE that!

We're really leaning towards St.Lucia's Sandals bc of the waterfalls, volcanoes, beaches, and have heard great things about it.

We wanted to St. Lucia as well. But the travel was an issue. For some reason the only flights we could find were 11 hour flights, due to delay in Canada. So we decided on Sandals, Jamaica. I forget the name, but its the one with 2 other resorts around it. So you can go to the other two as well.

St Lucia in a heartbeat, I don't really like Jamiaca that much and feel a little limited to staying on the resort, St Lucia is so lush and pretty!

I know i've commented however as i'm writing, my dad is telling me about the trip he & my mom took. they stayed at the Grande twice. Although they never stayed, they did take a shuttle from the Grande to Halycon to go to their restaurants, but didn't think it was as nice.

what they & their friends really liked about the Grande were taking the hobiecats out into the bay, walk down towards the fort with 'the quaintest bar that was really fun. meet the locals. have to pay since it's just off the resort but it was great fun.'

fun things but have to pay addition: jeep rides to go to banana plantations, volvano, rainfalls. catamaran was the best part.

The Grande is ~15 minutes away from Castries, the main city on the island. hope this helps a little more.
