Honeymoon... Is this so lame?

Jen P., on February 23, 2011 at 4:52 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 44

As much as my FH and I would love to do Hawaii, we're already having trouble finding funds for our own wedding so as an alternative honeymoon I was considering spending a week in San Diego since we love it so much.. Any other brides out there do non-exotic honeymoons?

My other thought was to do a night in a downtown hotel and then take the actual honeymoon later when we could afford it, but I'm thinking it wouldn't feel so much like a honeymoon then... :/

    Hate being so broke.

We talked about it, but ended up deciding on a cruise.

We toyed with the idea of just doing a weekend in the hill country (a couple hours drive away). We thought about jsut checking into a local bed and breakfast for a couple of days.

A honeymoon should be all about spending time together- and it doesn't NEED to be on an exotic beach somewhere. It cna even be at your own home- just turn off your phones and lock your doors so no one intrudes on your 'private' time.

We are doing exotic... that is if you consider the Pirates of the Carribean ride exotic.. we wanted to do Hawaii as well but with the kids at home it makes it a bit difficult.. so we are doing Disneyland for 4 days and then we will do Hawaii with the family next summer... Yes being broke sux but as long as you get some quality time together and enjoy yourselves, it really doesn't matter where you go.

I'm from San Diego and I can tell you it's an awesome place to vacation! See if Paradise Point is in your budget for a place to stay… it'll give you the tropical destination feel but you're literally 15 minutes from downtown. PM me if you want any other suggestions on places to go~

FH & I wanted to go on a cruise but since we're doing a semi-destination wedding in Myrtle Beach, we just decided to honeymoon there as well. FH has never been to the beach & its always something he's wanted to do & I love the beach!!

Since we are having a DW in Vermont, on the Monday after the wedding, we are going to Niagra Falls, Ontario.

We are staying at the Embassy Suites in a Jr. Presidential Suite for 3 days. They have floor to ceiling views of the falls, and a view of the falls from the Jacuzzi. I can't think of a better place to spend our first days as husband and wife.

We have toed with a bunch of ideas. when we were still dating we joked about taking a week or 2 of and go to a whole bunch of theme parks. after we got engaged it went to we want to travel cross country, and not do a whole lot of anything. then it wen to "lets just go camping". then to lets go on a cruise beasue tis may be the last time we get to go somewhere witout kids. then it went to "darn! we are out of $$$" so a honeymoon can be anything/anywhere you want it to be.

@Carole- Holy cow that place looks cool!!

We are doing a cruise, however, if we had not decided on a cruise I would have been all for a week in either New Orleans or Destin, Florida. You don't have to travel far for a wonderful honeymoon, that's for sure. Honestly though, we spend so much money in one weekend at either of those places that I'm not sure we didn't come out cheaper with the cruise Smiley laugh

I'd say do what you love and have the funds for. Regardless, if you are checking into a hotel, B&B, whatever, make sure they know it is your honeymoon (even if it's a mini-moon or just for one night). You deserve the royal treatment, whether it's in your hometown or someplace exotic!

San Diego is truly my favorite place in the US (I'm sure Hawaii would top it lol) but it's just so chill there and the beaches are awesome, especially Escondido.

Lindsey, I would absolutely recommend Escondido, CA! They have beach houses there and I am sure you can grab a good deal off craigslist for one! I think that will be our plan B if we can't get enough to go to Hawaii.

Any other recomendations within the US? It would be in the fall so I'm looking for somewhere with good weather! lol

We were going to do Hawaii, then we decided a cruise to the western carribbean would be nice, then I toyed with the idea of 4 days in Disney followed by a 3 day Bahamas Cruise ... then I had to face reality, the harshness of reality and realize we just do not nor will we have the money to do anything major for our honeymoon, unless a job comes through in the next 2 months .... so today I texted FS and said well why don't we just road trip back to VA after our semi-destination wedding in IL ... and so we more than likely may just do that, it'll be fun ... I think ... and then I'm hoping next summer 2012 after I finish grad school we are packing our bags for that cruise we wanted to go on for our honeymoon.

Thanks everyone. It was relatively reasonable too. They even offer a honeymoon package with petals, candles, champagne and chocolate covered strawberries.

San Diego can be a great honeymoon. There is Point Loma beach and the Zoo, and Sea World (OK, so there is a big kid on the inside). Plus some great restaurants. You could have a fabulous time in San Diego!

Have you thought about renting a vacation home in Hawaii? I'm also toying with Hawaii but it's so expensive that I'm not sure we will be able to swing it. One of the other brides recommended www.vrbo.com where you can rent a condo for a good price. It won't be a resort experience, but you'll probably be so busy doing other things you won't notice too much.

Also, some of the chain hotels/resorts offer AAA discounts of up to $72/nite from what I've been pricing out.

Not lame at all! I wanted Hawaii as well and we ran into the same problem you are having about money. Our honeymoon will consist of a week in Myrtle Beach in a very nice resort, it's not the Hilton, but its nicer than what we would normally stay in on a normal vaction.
