It really depends on what you'd want to do? Do like to be in nature? Try great restaurants? See theater? NYC can be a lot of fun but obviously is expensive. I personally think Cape May is nicer than the Poconos. Beautiful nature, beach, etc.

You're close to Atlantic City too, that could be fun. or there is a new hotel in Asbury Park that opened last year that I think looks really fun interesting (I haven't been personally though) http://www.theasburyhotel.com/ - reviews on Tripadvisor look good too.

What time of year are you going? I am from the NJ Area and cape may is GORGEOUS spring and summer especially. Lots to walk astound to do and see fairly close driving distance for a day/overnight to AC plus the beach

Poconos is good for fall lots of gorgeous hiking!

^ what she said lol. What's your ideal vacation? If you enjoy night clubs, theater and really great (but usually massively expensive) food then nyc. If you want woods, nature, peace and quiet go to the Poconos or even Amish country in Lancaster pa. You could even do Philadelphia and see all the historical places there. If you like the beach them go to Cape May, it may be a bit chilly though for the beach and some places may not be open yet since it'll still be before memorial day

We love sight seeing, relaxing, great food &cocktails. we are social and love to hang with locals more of day drinkers with sun and bar hop with live bands ..not EDM crazy night clubs

Cape May is beautiful and quaint but still has good restaurants, breweries and a boardwalk!

My family has been going to lower Cape May County for decades. I think it's much better in the off season. I'm not a fan of heat or noise or crowds; the traffic on "the island" can be maddening.

We always check to see when the lifeguards will be on duty, and visit before and after. I.e. This year their full coverage is June 10th - Sept 10th in Cape May. We're renting a place down there in mid-September this year.

I think each works great for a specific season so that might help you choose. We went to Cape May in the month of March one year for his birthday and although that was off season, I absolutely loved it. Went to wineries and concerts. I love the Albert Steven Inn, bed and breakfast owned by a couple. They were amazing and the food was ugh ... soooooo good! I just find Cape May so relaxing and with the right schedule and activities it can be super romantic. For reference, grew up in Bronx then Montclair, NJ. Currently reside in Queens and have family in the Poconos. Despite all that, still love me some Cape May <3

Poconos!!! The cutest place for a romantic getaway/honeymoon. Been there twice and enjoyed it! As others mentioned it's nice for hiking and being outdoors. Bolder field is a neat thing so see while you're there.

You're comparing a very major and busy city (and I love NYC) to mountains and a beach community. It all depends what you're looking for. I'd pick Cape May for a chill beach vacation. But if I were looking for art, theater, restaurants, street photography, etc. New York would be it. Poconos are great if you like mountains, hiking, mountain biking, and want to be able to escape people.

Cape May, or what about the north fork of LI? Great restaurants, great vineyards- beach, and low key vibe.

NYC has gone to complete shit IMHO. If you mean Long Island (North or South Fork) or the Hudson Valley, NY (Mohonk Mountain House) could be a good option but trust me Manhattan will disappoint! Cape May would be my choice personally, but my parents honeymooned in the Poconos and loved it many moons ago!
