Honeymoon in Mexico & pregnant

Soon2bMrsDeFino, on April 4, 2013 at 1:01 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 17

Okay, so we are going to a resort in the Rivieria Maya in Mexico and I am 9 weeks pregnant. Everyone that I tell we are going to Mexico for our honeymoon, freaks out and asks me if I got vaccines. SO, I called my doctor and they said to check the CDC website and go from there. I did that and it really doesn't clarify anything for me. (when I read the CDC info it makes it sound like if you are going to a remote area, not a touristy resort area).

SO - anyone been to Mexico, honeymoon or not, while pregnant? Certain things I should eat, not eat (I know the basic info of foods, etc from the dr), drink only bottled water the whole time, things I should and shouldn't do and do I need to get shots before hand?

We leave in a month and already had it booked when we found out about the baby and I really don't want to cancel!

HELP!!

Any info appreciated, as people are starting to freak me out about it! Thanks!

    People need to chillax.

Drink lots of (bottled) water and make sure your food is fully cooked. Use common sense about activities and you'll be fine.

I wouldn't go shooting myself up with all sorts of foreign substances (and I'm not anti-vaccine) before traveling, but check with your doctor and see what s/he recommends.

People have been getting pregnant and delivering babies for thousands of years.

Of late, pregnant women have traveled with no issues either, for business and pleasure.

Now's a great time to be traveling too. You'll be in the early stages of the second trimester, which is by far the easiest time. Morning sickness, if you had it will most likely be gone or be significanly less bothersome, you'll feel pretty good, still have energy, not be too big. I think it's perfect timing really.

So you're having a combo honeymoon/babymoon. Sounds fantastic.

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Drink only bottled water, do not eat from street vendors and make sure your TB stuff is up to date. That is all you have to worry about.

Okay good. I wasn't worried about any of it until other people got me all freaked out. I mean, I called the doctor and I figured if they wern't that concerned, then I was probably okay. And I'm not 100% on board with getting all shot up like you said @Paris because I haven't even gotten that far to think about those items yet! I obviously will be using common sense and I think I'm just going to have to tell people that when they mention something!

@MrsGC - We are staying at the Occidential Grand Xcarat. Everywhere we wanted to go was out of our budget & then I came across a good deal on Cheapcaribbean.com for it & couldn't pass it up. Its big enough that it has a bunch of different options, but then Playa De Carmen is only 10 minutes I believe & its more quiet & white sandy beaches, etc. Plus it has a 'amusement park' area next door that you can swin with dolphins, turtles, stuff like that. FH gets bored easily, so he's not really the type to go and lay on the beach whole time

I have only been to the border cities.. El Paso and rocky point.. All I know is don't drink the water there.. Drink bottled water.. Also I don't think you need to get vaccinated like other countries.. I have friends that go to Mexico all the time because of family and I doubt they get vaccinated.

I've been to Riviera Maya and Cozumel. The CDC doesn't require any vaccines before going to those parts of Mexico. If you are staying at the resort the whole time, I wouldn't worry about it. If you were going to border towns or more remote areas, then I'd consider it. Most resorts have only bottled water, clean food, etc. so you should be okay (where are you staying). Generally fresh produce where you eat the outside (think Apples, not oranges) are the concern, so I'd try to stay away from that. But again - if you are only eating at a nice resort you are probably okay regardless.

Just saw your comment about where you are staying. You should be fine at that place with anything. But to be cautious, just stick with bottle watered and avoid fresh produce when possible.

I would also probably avoid fresh/raw fruits that can't be peeled and vegetables (like salad) as these are often washed in Mexican water or not washed at all.

Ice...good thinking. I would have probably thought about that but didn't right now. I got a tetnus shot a few months ago to prevent from getting whopping cough (it was going around here) so I think I will be good to go. I do see my doctor once more before we leave, so I will make a list of things to ask him.

Bottled water, stick to foods you are familiar with, I also stay away from salads made with mayo, what resort are you going to be staying at. I would so a google search on what to look out for at that certain resort.

I haven't traveled while pregnant, but we went to Jamaica last year with our 1 year old daughter, so I had to be aware of everything for her sake. Also take some hand sanitizer for the plane. My daughter and husband both caught something on the plane, which resulted in a trip to the onsite doctor

I have firsthand experience in traveling to the same area of Mexico while pregnant, I was just 6.5 months while I was at the Adventura Spa Palace Resort. The suggestions on bottled water, and cooked foods are correct. I'd also have your travel agent put in a room request so that you are close to the main building and restaurants. If you're swelling you won't want to walk forever! Also, I would STRONGLY suggest travel insurance!!! It will be hot in Mexico so drink lots of water!! Safe travels and congratulations!

    Congrats on baby Smiley smile

Obviously only drink bottled water, and probably stay away from ice. Use common sense and you and baby will be just fine Smiley smile I'm not so sure on the raw foods though, keep them cooked

Congrats! It's all basically been said already but just to reassure even more... I worked on a cruise ship through Mexico and Caribbean for 5 years and never once got any vaccines and never once got sick. The ice thing is the biggest thing to keep an eye on because they serve everything on ice, other than that... Have fun!!
