Honeymoon- How much to spend?

Brittani, on November 19, 2020 at 11:21 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 15

Hi All! Looking for a gut-check here... We have been very frugal about our wedding and both of our families have chipped in to help with wedding expenses, and in total we are probably going to spend between $10-12k on the entire wedding.

However- we are starting to plan our honeymoon, and we REALLLYYYY want to do a fly fishing and snorkeling trip to Belize! Which is not cheap- we are looking at around $8k for the two of us for a week (this is all inclusive and factors in flights). I'm just looking for a gut-check... is this outrageously expensive? Especially since we've been so frugal with our overall wedding and are accepting help from our families?

I know we could do something a lot cheaper, but we really aren't "sit around the beach drinking margs" kind of people, and this would literally be a dream honeymoon for both of us! It's the fishing and the snorkeling activities that makes it so expensive, not necessarily the location or the resort itsself.

What do you think? Is it ok to splurge?

If you can afford it without going into debt then go for it.

Woah, I am out of touch. I cannot believe that a wedding is considered frugal for $8-10k! When I think frugal my mind goes to courthouse wedding.

Well obviously courthouse would be the cheapest option- however, given that we wanted to include our families and a handful of close friends, and we don't have a good backyard to use for a "backyard wedding," now we need a venue, food, drinks, etc. So, yes we will be lucky to be done with it for under $10k! Things are expensive these days...

I say definitely go for it 🧳 We travel the world and that cost is typical for where we go. You won’t regret it. Just make sure to do your research ahead of time and figure out best places to stay / eat / snorkel, etc.! Happy travels 🤍

I do agree with pp in that if you can afford it without going into debt or straining yourself, then sure. i will say that i splurged for my honeymoon. i mean i still didn't spend an outrageous amount but i will say it was the more expensive trip i've taken compared to all my other trips. we spent around 6k for the both of us with flights. so yours isn't too far off. i also don't know how expensive that location is where you're going or how much flights are on average, etc. so overall if you're spending something that you're comfortable with and that you won't be financially burdened with then ok!

Okay if you're happy then I'm happy for you!
My family friend used the backyard of his former boss for his wedding. They had 10 guests total and spent about $1,000 in total. We all have different perspectives of what expensive and frugal are. I was just pointing that out. No shade here.
Best wishes to you.Honeymoon- How much to spend? 1

Echoing other people's thoughts, as long as you don't have to go in debt, and both of you are super excited about it, do it!!

Splurging every now and then - especially during a huge event in your life - isn't bad, and you don't have to feel guilty about it (:

It sounds like you have done a great job of been frugal for your wedding, so why not splurge on my honeymoon?! If you can afford it, I say go for it! Plus, if you and your spouse are planning to start a family soon, this may be one of the last times you have to easily get away.

I think it’s all about what you can afford! It was super important to my now husband that our honeymoon be a once in a lifetime special trip, so we majorly splurged. Our wedding cost about $25k, and we probably spent $15k all in on our honeymoon (2.5 weeks in Hawaii).

I feel you girl! We’re spending around $15K for the wedding & it’s our dream wedding. If you have the funds to splurge on the honeymoon without going into debt than do it. Personally, going over $6K is a little too much but you do you! Our honeymoon is going to be around $5200 (that’s 2 round trip 1st class tickets). We’re going to Jamaica, to an all inclusive Sandals resort.

"Frugal" is in the eye of the beholder.

Our wedding was more expensive than yours, but we got married in NYC, and had help. We spent about $3k on the honeymoon, and that was a splurge for us. (We chose Disney, and we had a great time.)

It's all about your personal comfort level and what you can afford!

If this is your dream - and you can swing it - DO IT.

If you worried about costs have you ever been to Belize? It's not that expensive if you plan it yourself rather than through a travel agency and you can easily do a week lovely hotel with snorkeling/diving/fly fishing for half that price.... just more legwork ... still same amazing beaches and cocktails though .... so buy a travel guide(lonely planet, hostelworld check online etc) and just plan yourself if you feel it's too much spent. it's super easy to do.... and the best food btw is not the all inclusive at the hotel but the fresh fish grilled on the beach-catch of the day.... so don't rule out not "all inclusive" places

If that is within your budget, I say go for it! You (hopefully) only get married once and your honeymoon should be a great celebration and time for you and your new spouse. We splurged on our wedding and had planned to splurge on our honeymoon (Covid cancelled our big honeymoon) and we don't regret the expense at all.

Personally I wouldn't spend that much for one week, I did so much research and found first class tickets at crazy affordable prices. My husband and I both make decent money but felt that anything above $5,000 was way too much. We ended up doing 1 week in Cancun at a high end all inclusive resort, we had all sorts of honeymoon packages that included special breakfast in bed, romantic private dinners on the beech at night, private tequila tastings, private live music, massages, spa treatments and even out of the hotel tour excursions. We spent about $4,000, this also included private SUV pick ups with champagne to and from the resort. I had our 1st wedding anniversary planned for Europe earlier this year, it was all cancelled but I had set up 2 wonderful weeks starting in Rome, Italy and finishing in Barcelona, Spain. I had carefully picked out Airbnbs that were a great distance from main attractions and had literally booked events for almost every day consisting of tours, food events, wine tasting, country tours, tango dancing, pasta making and pizza making, everything. This trip was at about the $5,000-6,000 range, of course this was minus spending money but this was supposed to be a once in a lifetime European adventure, hopefully it'll happen eventually. I mean we are still looking to buy a house, California is super expensive.

Since our Europe trip was cancelled, hubby and I went back to Mexico and stayed at an even better resort this past September, this trip was about $3,000, first class roundtrip tickets again as well. This trip was so amazing, the service in Mexico is unmatchable , its really like no where else. Yes location has everything to do with price but so does timing and a little bit of research.
