Honeymoon During Christmas?

AJ, on April 15, 2018 at 8:45 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 27

We're getting married on September 29th and with me being a teacher, we simply are not able to take a honeymoon right away. Originally we planned on taking our honeymoon the next summer, but we don't really want to wait that long, and my fiancé REALLY wants to go somewhere warm...I don't do very well in temps above 80.

We've started considering going to New Orleans over Christmas--I get a week off from school, he can take time whenever, and the average temp. in December is definitely something I could handle.

Has anyone taken their honeymoon over Christmas? Did you regret missing the first Christmas as "family" with your loved ones, or was it nice to spend it just the two of you? Any other big things to consider?

This is going to depend on your views on Christmas and your family dynamics, which we don’t know.
I’d never do this, but my FH wouldn’t care. We’ve vacationed over Thanksgiving before and while it was fun, I did miss my family and the traditions we have.
Keep in mind a lot of stuff is closed at that time, I’m not sure what you’re planning on doing.
Why not leave after Christmas and go on a mini-moon, come back New Years or the day after?

We get along very well with our families, but holidays are NOT relaxing--we have to run to 4 Christmases every year because both sets of parents are divorced. Normally we're (mostly) okay with that, but we're thinking we might welcome just one Christmas alone.

That's a really good point about things being closed though, and the span of time between the 26th and the 1st is kind of perfect vacation length. Thanks for that suggestion! Smiley smile

Something to consider might be that flights and hotels tend to be more expensive during peak travel times like the winter holidays, if you're looking to be budget-friendly.

We have the same situation with a September wedding and me being a teacher. I’ve traveled on Christmas once before and I don’t regret it. It was a once in a lifetime trip. I was too busy to miss anyone. But I’m not ready to miss the holiday again. We’re planning to leave late Christmas night or early the next morning and I’ll take one additional day off from work to make it a full week. I think it’s a reasonable compromise.

This crossed my mind as well with 3 sets of parents to see. But ulimately I think if we didn’t see any of them for Christmas we would end up trying to make up for it earlier in December and just stress ourselves out more.

The plan sounds good but I think your husband is going to be disappointed with how chilly it is. Florida should fit your needs.

We're in northern Minnesota so 65 degrees would still be a very nice break from our -30 😂

I personally have very little desire to see Florida, but maybe that's just because I associate it with Disney and alligators haha. We could look into beachy areas.

Hmmm yeah I could see my fiancé coming to that plan too despite him currently saying otherwise. Looks like day after Christmas is a pretty solid way to go!

I have to agree with this. I'm from LA and usual temp is in the 60s. However at least a few times a year, we get freak temps where highs are in the 20s.

Well that would certainly be a bummer! I'll definitely have to let him know. We were looking for a place that's warmer than where we live and wouldn't be in peak tourist season but maybe New Orleans isn't quite the compromise we thought it would be.

Yeah. This year I was in shorts on Christmas and then it was in the 30s within a few days. The weather is hard to predict. It's still warmer than Minnesota, but maybe not quite as warm as you're hoping.
That's just something to consider. New Orleans is still a fun place to visit and Jackson Square is beautiful around Christmas.

Good point. We went to NOLA at the end of January last year and it was in the 60s.
So OP just make sure you have the right expectations.
FL is a big state. We’ve been to the Keys and it was so chill. But any time during winter break it’s going to be expensive flights wise.

Fiancee and I are getting married Sep. 15th and taking honeymoon in California from Dec. 25-Jan 5. Our flight is leaving late Christmas, so we won't miss Christmas with the family. We plan to drive up the Pacific Coast Highway, starting in LA. I think the weather will be in the 50s and 60s during that time, which is perfect for us. We don't like super hot weather and aren't really beach people. Tip: flights are usually much cheaper on Christmas Day than the day after!

Yeah flights to the Keys start at $400/pp and basic hotels $200/night, we wouldn't be able to afford that Smiley sad It does look beautiful though, maybe we'll just save up and go there down the road.

NOLA we could fly for about the same price but get good lodging for $60/night at a B&B. Depends how fiancé feels about it not being very warm. I'l ljust have to keep hunting for affordable warm vacations; may be a lot to ask that time of year!

Well Florida definitely doesn't only consist of alligators and Disney, though I am from Florida and love it and Disney. This year for weather in central Florida, it was cold over the holidays. 50s and rainy and not nice at all for be entire week after Christmas. The year before was 80 deg on Christmas Day so it depends on the year. NOLA would likely be quite a bit chilier even, but also depends on the year. For me, the hotter the better anytime so 50s was not what I wanted lol.

If it makes any difference, we flew Southwest into Fort Lauderdale, rented a fun car (a yellow mustang) and drove down. Southwest usually has cheap flights into FL. We stayed in an Air BNB which was budget friendly.
I think your plan does sound like a good one.
Have you thought about cruises? You can get one out of NOLA or different ports in FL. You could fly in a day or two early if you want. You get warmth, can see different ports, can relax but also get adventure. You still have time to apply for passports if you do that. I always recommend cruising, it’s such a fun time and we always enjoy it. Carnival is a budget friendly line, though Norwegian has good deals too.
NOLA does sound great, I love the city and want to go back. Just not sure if your priority is NOLA or the weather.

I'm more about exploring culture and the area, FH is more about the weather. I originally wanted Montreal or Bruges, he wanted Hawaii, we're trying to find some sort of compromise! A cruise doesn't sound like a bad idea--it would be fun to get to see more than one place. Thanks for all of your suggestions!

I personally wouldn't mind missing that big family first Christmas for my honeymoon. We'd probably go see family and celebrate later.

Teacher here getting married in October, so pretty much in the same boat. I’m leaning towards the summer, so that we could do a 2 week situation. But, this past Christmas we decided to not “celebrate” Christmas and go away instead. We planned a trip to Punta Cana for a week and left 12/23. To my surprise, he actually proposed on Christmas morning. We didn’t really miss Christmas and just met up with family when we got home to exchange gifts. Granted my mom slightly threatened me to not do it again this year 😂.
