Honeymoon cruise - Alaska

Emily, on December 1, 2019 at 9:19 AM Posted in Honeymoon 2 8
FH and I decided on a cruise to Alaska for our honeymoon. Neither of us have been on a cruise or seen Alaska so we are really looking forward to it. I’ve been doing some research on cruise lines and it’s all very confusing on which one is better for our honeymoon. We’d like to go in June or July 2021. (Wedding is in October 2020, but because of work schedules it’s the only thing that fits our timeline) I’ve been looking at Norwegian, Carnival and Royal Caribbean. Is there anyone that has first hand experience with any of these cruise lines that I can make a more informed opinion?

Yes! We did a Norwegian cruise to Alaska out of Seattle a few summers ago. We also did a Norwegian Caribbean cruise. I've also been on Royal Caribbean cruise line before, to the Caribbean as well. I've never used Carnival because I've heard bad things. As far as the cruise lines themselves, Norwegian was hands down better (in our opinion). The food choices were better; on Royal Caribbean, all that was included was the buffet and the regular plated dinner restaurant, where we had to select a meal time that was the same every night for the duration of the cruise, which was annoying if there were days we wanted to eat earlier/later depending on what we did that day. None of the specialty restaurants were included. On Norwegian, we had access to the buffet and several nice restaurants, as well as cafes and taverns that were available during lunchtime hours too. For the nice restaurants, all I had to do was make reservations for a time (do this before you set sail because they do fill up and then you're stuck at the buffet every night!). I just thought the quality of food was better overall. I also felt like they had better entertainment and the ship itself was nicer. I do realize each cruise line has different levels of ships and some are nicer than others. I just felt with all things considered, Norwegian was a more enjoyable cruise line. As for the trip to Alaska itself, it was AMAZING!! Summertime is best obviously. Plan your excursions before you board the ship to ensure you get what you want. We did the Mendenhall Glaciar and humpback whale boat tour in Juneau, train and bus tour up into Canada, float plane in Ketchikan- there are so many options and it's absolutely gorgeous there! Sorry for the long post- Alaska was by far one of my all-time favorite vacations (I've seen a lot of the world but this was the most beautiful!) and I'm so excited for you to spend your honeymoon there! I can imagine if you tell the cruise line when you book they will probably upgrade you and give you some nice extras since it's your honeymoon! Have fun!

It’s been years but I’ve been on all three cruise lines. Royal Caribbean was the nicest. I loved Carnival in my 20’s but it was the party cruise line, not sure if that’s still their reputation.

I’ve been on five Carnival cruises and have never run into that “party ship” atmosphere people talk about, mostly people who’ve never been on Carnival. Royal Caribbean & Norwegian are more expensive than Carnival and I can’t see justifying the extra expense for an already expensive trip. An Alaska cruise is on my bucket list

My parents and 3 other couples they're close friends with went on a cruise to Alaska in August of this year for 7 days! They went out of Vancouver on Princess Cruises and disembarked in Whittier, AK. They loved it and really recommend Princess! They found a really great deal, and it was only $699 per person. They did Glacier Wind Charters whale watching in Hoonah, AK and Trail of '98 Private Tour in Skagway, AK.

We haven't been to Alaska (though we are planning to), but we went to the Bahamas on Royal Caribbean for our honeymoon and it was AMAZING! I have heard negative things about Carnival as well, and honestly they were very similar in price. We booked through cruisesonly.com, they have really good deals. I bet your trip will be amazing!

I've been looking more closely at the Norwegian cruise line. I really like that you get all the extras but the price is the most expensive. I guess that's why. I'll keep looking. I haven't looked closely at Princess Cruises so that's an option too!

We went on a Norwegian Alaska cruise for vacation and love it! It was amazing and you will have so much fun. The other cruise line I would look at is Princess. They are specifically know for thier Alaska cruises.

Thanks all. What port is a must go when trying to pick an Alaskan cruise? I know it might be different if one cruise line goes to a port and another might not.
