Been to both! Cancun once, Key West several times. In Cancun we stayed in a resort, in Key West we rented little houses.

They're both totally different vibes. In Cancun, you're probably going to want to spend most of your time in your resort or nearby. There's not a lot of opportunity to explore the city or see historical sights, due to the language barrier and the fact that every area isn't necessarily safe for tourists. We're BIG on historical things in our family, so Cancun doesn't have near as much of that as Key West. However, if you're into hanging out in a resort, being pampered, laying on the beach, partying late night, then that's Cancun!

But if you want to see some really cool historical sites (Hemingway House, the Little White House, Shipwreck museum, Dry Tortugas, more!) then Key West can't be beat. It also has a really awesome, walk-everywhere, very safe and artsy-fartsy atmosphere. You can spend hours walking through little streets, going in boutiques, chatting with locals, having a drink. But there aren't really any beaches to speak of. We had a house with a small pool and went snorkeling one day, so that pretty much met my water quota. But if you need a beach, Key West can't help you there.

They're essentially two totally different locales. If you want a low-key, interesting, sight-seeing, and local-color-oriented trip, I'd say Key West (personally, we love it. Nowhere else in the world like it). If you want to party, lay on the beach, and be protected, I'd go for Cancun.

Never been to either place. We have been to the Dominican Republic many times and are going back there for our honeymoon. We stay at the RIU resorts there. Very clean, beautiful beaches, and the food is delicious. The resort is all inclusive. We have booked all of our trips through southwest vacations and have never had an issue. Flight, hotel, transfer to and from the airport. Everything is perfect through them. The people who we get the transfer to and from the airport come the following day to tell you the time for pick up. We booked excursions through them and couldn't have been happier. Check out Dominican.

Never been to key west but if you got to Mexico I would go to Rivera maya instead of Cancun! It's more relaxing, and bigger resorts! I loved it and I'm going back to Mexico for my honeymoon staying at the excellence resorts!

We're going to Mexico and staying at Finest Playa Mujeres. Which I believe is right outside of Cancun, more relaxed and not such a party atmosphere. FH booked the whole thing and only told me the name of it so all of the details will be a surprise so I don't know much, but he did a lot of research and this was the best option for us.

Look into Playa del Carmen. We stayed at an amazing bnb and it was near EVERYTHING (beaches, grocery stores, shopping, yummy food)! I wish I would have known some Spanish but we survived just fine the whole week walking with the locals and tourists alike.

I personally enjoyed the trip to Playa so much more than when I went to Cozumel and stayed at an all inclusive. I personally don't enjoy Vegas and that is how it felt at the all inclusive. Tons of tourists and NO genuine culture. Plus I felt like we were locked in to being there everyday since "everything" was paid for.

    Dinostar nailed it.

However when we went to key west we stayed at the Reach, about 2 blocks from Duval St (the street with all the action) and it has the only natural made beach on key west. We got a little bit of everything, beach, pool, and fun nightlife

We're going to the keys !! Mexico is nice we had a house in Cabo but because of the safety concerns for Americans we sold it. Like others said you will spend most time in the resort in Mexico. I would opt for the keys !!

Both locations are very nice and offer a lot. If you are looking for an all-inclusive, then you need to stay with Mexico. If you are more adventurous, explore the different Key Islands.

The resort styles are very different. Most of the Key Islands are laid back and quite. If you want some action and clubs at night, them you need to focus on Key West.

I'm happy to answer more questions if you need help.

I think it really depends on the experience you're looking for. All-inclusive resort? Probably Mexico. If you want to do more exploration? Key West.

Went to riviera maya last June and while I really enjoyed the facilities, the food wasn't great and I literally got sick after every meal. Not sure if it was just me and FH getting sick because the resort had really good reviews, but I would avoid the Barcelo resorts there! (5 resorts on one property). I remember thinking how disappointed I would have been if that was my honeymoon. Side note, if you go to Cancun area definitely go to an open and closed cenote, it was so fun!

I would totally pick Mexico. Key west would be awesome but would probably just feel like an extension of the US. And who says you can't explore Mexico? Rent a little scooter and venture out. That's what FH and I wanna do when we go. There's no way we're just staying at the resort the entire time.

There's lots of exploring to do in Mexico!! Resorts have excursions you can book. For example the Chichen Itza & cenote tour. You can take a ferry to Isla Mujeres and rent golf carts to explore the island. You can also snorkel with whale sharks.

Totally agree with mzj. There is a ton to do in Cancun and Riviera Maya! Mayan ruins for history, Xcaret for adventure and swimming with dolphins, snorkeling tours, jungle tours, tons of nightlife outside of the resorts, shopping/restaurants in downtown Playa del Carmen, and I could go on and on. All inclusive are good for convenience because all your food, alcohol, and gratuities (though please still tip because these people work so hard!) are all taken care of. If you want a lazy day of lounging around the pool or beach, you got it. If you want a day of fun and adventure off site, you got it. Not to mention the Yucatan Peninsula is one of the places that you can safely leave your resort and roam as you please if you want to rent a car. And if you don't want to stay at an all inclusive there are some amazing boutique hotels as well.

We honeymooned in Riviera Maya, Mexico and it was amazing! We stayed at the Secrets Silversands resort. Its close to Cancun (only 10-15 mins. from the airport) but nicer. Your money definitely goes farther in Mexico than in the US! The beaches of the Yucatan Peninsula are pretty rocky though, which makes them great for snorkeling but not so much for swimming (we had no issue with that because our resort had 7 pools). We did 2 excursions to go see some of the natural and historical sites, which we love to do when we visit a new place. The people who work with tourism - transfer drivers, staff at the resorts - speak pretty good English, and the airport was pretty easy to navigate with signs in English and Spanish...but keep in mind you are traveling to a foreign country, so you can't expect them to speak English.

The beaches being rocky all depends on where you are along the Peninsula. Playa de Maroma has some amazing beaches. Check out Secrets Maroma Beach. Some areas have more waves than other. Some areas are completely calm. Here is a picture from one of my last trips where I stayed in Cancun at the RIU Caribe. One of the best beaches for swimming and snorkeling I've seen in a while!
