Honeymoon- Cabo vs Cancun vs Puerto Vallarta

Jillian, on June 18, 2016 at 1:51 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19

I would love to go to Hawaii for our honeymoon, but it's way more expensive than Mexico, which is also much closer to us in San Diego. We are looking at places in Mexico that are safe and nice for a honeymoon. The only problem is we have no idea about the differences between these three that seem to come up the most- Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, and Puerto Vallarta. Does anyone have any experience with which is best? Or heard more good things about one over the others?

I've been to all three and my favorite is Puerto Vallarta... less rain and beautiful spacious beaches. We stayed at Riu Palace Pacifico and I don't have one bad thing to say about it! Cancun is big for partying and it didn't help that we went around Spring Break, so I don't have fond memories. If you choose an adults only resort, you will love it though!

Another vote here for PV. It's definitely better for non-spring break activities.

Never been to Riviera Maya/Playa del Carmen but so many people we know love it! So we will be going to Excellence Riviera Cancun, 20 miles south of Cancun. Check out that, plus the Secrets resorts or Paradisus La Perla.

I've been to Puerto Vallarta and it was beautiful! It's pretty much a resort city.

I've been to all three. Cancun has so much to do and a lot of night life but there are great places outside of cancun that are more quiet. PV is great too but I like cancun beaches better. Cabo is like San Diego

I agree, Cabo is like San Diego. Puerto Vallarta is my favorite. Beautiful tropical beaches with wild parrots flying overhead.

I've only been to PV, and honestly, I felt like I was being hustled all the time. However, we did take a guided tour over to Yalapa. LOVED it. It was my absolutely favorite part of the trip. We snorkeled with angel fish, caught skip-jack on the way over, the restaurant there cooked it for us, and we hiked up to the waterfall. The beach there reminded me of a Corona commercial. If you can get a resort that protects you from the time-share sharks, you'll be better off. We used a friend's timeshare there and we were pestered all the time. I think that was my biggest issue....being hounded about time shares and beach/street vendors.

I also vote for Puerto Vallarta i as well stayed in the RIU it was amazing. If you want to get out of the the resort there is aguas termales and if you make it to Nayarit vist La tobara its a boat ride where you see alligators and exotic birds and when you get to the end the water is super clear and you get to swim with the fish its beautiful.. There is definitely more to mexico than resorts. .

Puerto Vallarta is on the Pacific, so the beach is pretty "Standard". Cancun has picture perfect beaches with bright turquoise water and white sand. I've been to both. Cancun is much more beautiful, IMO.

You can pretty much have the same experiences at both.

The nice thing about Cancun is that there are some awesome Mayan ruins near by.

    I vote Cancun!

The biggest difference is the ocean, so it depends on how important it is to you to swim in the ocean. In Cabo, most of the resorts are on the Pacific, and the undertow is such that you can't swim. You can swim in the Sea of Cortez there, but I haven't stayed in a hotel on that beach. Also, Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are very different, with CSL being a more fun town, and many of the "Cabo" resorts are in the latter. PVR is a really fun town to walk around in and try great restaurants, but the ocean is underwelming. It's a little brown and not much different than swimming in the ocean in LA. Also, the beach is public, so vendors will harass you every 15 seconds to buy stuff. In PVR, I'll swim in the ocean but not lay out on the beach for that reason. Cancun has the white beach/ turquoise water. I personally like the quieter Rivera Maya over the Cancun Hotel Zone. I think it screams honeymoon more than anywhere else in Mexico. I will highly recommend the Valentin Imperial Maya as a gorgeous adults-only resort in Riveria Maya with great food, a beautiful no-vendors beach, and a pool the size of Costco.

You're not allowed to sell on the forums, jesssuz. There is a Facebook group - WW Bride 2 Bride - that allows sale posts.

    Who's selling? I think I missed something.

Check out seaweed conditions if you do Cancun. I love the resorts there, but they've had real problems off and on over the last few summers with awful, nasty seaweed washing up, clogging the shallows and beach area, and just being altogether nasty.

    PV gets my vote!

Cancun is very tourist. I would return to Puerto Vallarta for honeymoon. Nice place. I havent been to Cabo but others that have like it as safer than Cancun and more relaxed.

I have been to all three and Puerto Vallarta is my favorite! The ocean like CO Bride said is important I went to Cancun last month and the seaweed was gross. Cabo is pretty but it also has a spring break feel to it. I just got back from Puerto Vallarta. I stayed at the Secreta Vallarta Bay and you can't go into the beach because it's all rocky, but I did hear some of the other ones in the area are beautiful

I've been to all three and I would say Cancun. PVR had a way older crowd and FH and I were the youngest people at our resort. The beach vendors are also highly annoying in PVR...even going so far as to wake us up out of our beach naps on multiple occasions to try getting us to buy hats, scarves, bracelets, random items, etc.

Cancun was great because there was a mixture of relaxation and nightlife. If you want to do more than lounge on the beach, you can take a 30-minute bus to explore Playa del Carmen and even catch a ferry ride from there across the water to swim with dolphins in Cozumel. You can also drive and visit the Mayan ruins or catch a tour bus.
