Help with Wedding Party Colors!!!

Elizabeth, on September 3, 2020 at 12:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

I have been struggling hard with deciding a wedding party color scheme. My wedding theme is timeless and elegant, and roses are a MUST, so I was leaning towards red bridesmaid dresses, bouquets with red roses and baby's breath, groomsmen in black suits and red ties, and gold accents sprinkled in subtly. Firstly...do you think it will look nice? Secondly...my mother and junior bridesmaids don't look good in red or gold (they're pale redheads), so what should I have her wear? Also open to new color scheme suggestions that look timeless and elegant!

Hi! Still struggling with my colors over here so I get it haha.

My first thought is that it sounds like the roses are the focus for you so I worry the roses would get lost against red dresses. Contrast would make the roses really pop! If a gold/champagne is out of the question, what about a pale green/mint type color? The roses would be stunning against that color (and I think it would work with pale redheads?) and you can use red accents as well still.

Something like this? Just a thought!

You could always look at doing an emerald green color. It will be very elegant and complement the red heads very nicely and the roses

I think the color scheme and theme sounds beautiful! If it were me, I would probably put my bridesmaids in gold though, because long red dresses plus red bouquets might be a whole lot of red! Maybe have mom in a gorgeous black gown with a red corsage? Redheads look beautiful in black, and the red corsage will tie her in with everyone else

Black sequins would be nice for mom too- it would shine and sparkle even though it’s black

Thanks everyone, great suggestions! I'm not really a green person, even though that would look really nice! I think I'll play around with the idea of gold bridesmaid dresses, red accents, red roses, and see how my mother feels about a beautiful black dress. I hadn't thought about the roses getting lost with the red dresses, thanks for pointing it out!

Our colors were red and black with silver and blush as accent colors. The bridesmaids/groomswoman wore red dresses and the groomsmen/bride's man wore black tuxes with red vests, ties and pocket squares. The best man wore a silver pocket square to set him a apart and my husband wore a silver tie, vest and pocket square. The bridesmaids/groomswoman wore silver shoes. My mom wasn't in the wedding so she wore whatever color she was comfortable in. My two flower girls wore white dresses with a red sash to match the bridesmaids dresses. One of my flower girls is a red head and I thought the red sash looked fine with her red hair. The groomswoman also has dark red hair (not her natural hair) and I thought the red looked fine on her as well.

Hi Elizabeth! Have you asked your mom & junior bms what colors they do like wearing? I'm a pale redhead but don't mind red at all and would also happily wear something darker (burgundy or black) but pale golds / metallics / neutrals would make me more nervous with my pale complexion!

You could do blush & burgundy dresses or have the bridesmaids all in red, your mom in an elegant black dress, and the junior bms in white & black dresses! Here are a few color combos with red bridesmaid dresses that might help inspire you:

So, full disclosure, I'm not a fan of red to start with -- I think it is a hard/harsh color on a lot of people -- and I agree red roses will get kind of lost against a red dress. We attended a wedding with exactly that combo and it was a lot. If you want "timeless and elegant" I think there are some other alternatives that help create that vibe and are more flattering colors, like burgundy or wine (but probably not good with "true red" flowers). If red roses are a must, I agree with considering blush or perhaps a soft champagne color. True "gold" dresses are more difficult to find unless you're going with gold sequins, beading or lame. Another thing to consider is that there are a LOT of shades of red, ranging from tomato to fire truck to wine, personally, I think the darker reds are more rich and elegant looking. To me, bright reds kind of scream Christmas or 4th of July. Finally, daughter is a "ginger," and true reds are one of her absolute no's; however, she looks GORGEOUS in a soft gold or champagne. (Her wedding gown was ivory lace and tulle over a pale gold lining and it literally gave her an amazing soft, ethereal glow [beyond just regular wedding day bridal glow!] Smiley winking ). There are so many pretty palettes that would be enriched by red roses. Good luck!

Red and gold is a great color scheme. Gold is typically considered to be the best color for redheads. But you could have black dresses for them since it works on most people. The red doesn't have to be the dress color because it's part of your color scheme. Go with whatever you like.

Omg, that first picture is beautiful! I think that might be what I've been searching for, thank you SO MUCH! I bet there is a shade my mother will like within that color pallette. She has a hard time though because she's one of those redheads that doesn't look good in most shades of red and pink, regardless of how light or dark they are. I'll find her something though, thanks for that color scheme idea!

Thank you! This gave me a lot to think about. I think I like the blush and burgundy more than the red, because the more pictures I see, the more I think the bright red just doesn't fit my style and theme. My mother is insistent than any shade of pink or red looks horrible on her, but she's going to try some of those softer colors like you suggested. Fingers crossed!

Like I said, daughter is a Ginger.... From the time she was a toddler, jewel tones were her go to. She looks stunning in teal, peacock, deep green, plum, etc. When she was about 3 yrs old, we were at a playdate and she and the other little girls were dressing up in their various "princess dresses." Daughter came out in one of the other girl's gold lame Belle ballgown and all the moms joked about how "gold lame" should be daughter's signature color! I thought back to that when she ended up picking the wedding gown with the gold underlay.... Smiley winking And, she chose a dark Hunter green for her BMs because as she said, "Mom, I look GOOD surrounded by dark green!" Smiley winking lol.... She did, indeed, look gorgeous surrounded by dark green.... Good luck figuring out your colors! Smiley heart

You are kinder than I am - I am having red dresses, and my one BM has red hair... oops? But it is a gorgeous red and I still think she looks great in the dress. But if you don't want to go with the red dresses, then I would suggest maybe pink, as I think that goes with the red theme pretty well. Or the gold is also a great suggestion since that is another of your colors.

I have warm red auburn hair and cool pale pink skin with LOTS of freckles. It’s tough when you’re taking complexion and hair into consideration! Personally I would wear any dress the bride asked even if it wasn’t “my color” so it’s already amazing of you to take that into consideration!! In general I don’t really like bright red I think it’s very distracting. I love burgundy and wine and think it looks great on all complexerions and skin tones! No one in my bridal party has the same complexion undertones or hair color and my sister is same as me and I’m choosing burgundy or wine and leaning into jewel tones. I love burgundy/blush/ and rose gold together. I also wouldn’t do red dresses with red roses. But ivory roses with red or burgundy would be gorgeous and timeless. Good luck!

My first thought was black or champagne. But it looks like other posters had the same idea! Why not have them match the groomsmen and wear gold jewelry?

How about pink bridesmaids? Reds and pinks are a very romantic combination. Here are a few pics:
