Heather, on September 27, 2012 at 5:46 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 22

Hey ladies! Well, my fiance and I have decided on Hawaii for our honeymoon. But, now we need to pick and island and I have no idea where to start. I would love to hear from you ladies - where have you been, where are you booking, what did you like/dislike, and any recommendations! Thanks!

Hawaii is more tranquil, Maui is more party (from what I hear-- I am no expert). We did Kona Village, on Maui, which is a club-med kind of place and was *fantastic*. We got a little bungalo, our own hammock out front-- all we had to do was walk over for meals, then go lie in the hammock some more. If we wanted to scuba or sail, the stuff was right on the beach. For me it was *ideal* but I think it was a little slow for my husband. We also did a few days in Maui in Some Big Hotel and did parasailing, snorkeling, a luau-- all the traditional stuff, and that was more up his alley. Have a blast-- the honeymoon was *definitely* the best part of getting married, IMO!

We are doing the big island and maui...i would totally suggest the big island if you are more the adventurous type.we are staying on the koala coast on hapuna beach then in hilo for the last night to see volacnoes national park..there are sooo many things to do and beautiful sights to see on the big island..trip advisor is a great start when doing research..i found my travel agent on wedding wire and she was AMAZING.we only had to put a small deposit down and dont have to pay any of the rest until march.also if the airline tickets or hotels go down in price we will automatically get the better price..if you want her info at all pm me and i will send it to you!

We are doing Oahu (Pearl Harbor is a must for FH) and Maui. We also used a travel agent (I love her and the BP used her as well as our guests), she saved us over $1,000.00...we too had to put down a deposit and the rest is due about 45 days before departure. No matter what you do get travel insurance...seriously worth what little it costs....http://www.gohawaii.com/ is a helpful website....it has all of the islands on there =)

I have booked many couples to all the islands, it really depends on how much time you have, what you like to do and your budget. There are so many options, please email me at *********@*****.***, would love to help you put an amazing honeymoon package together. There is no fee to use my services, and I have access to many resources that are not available on the internet.

We're doing Maui (I've been once), Big Island, and Kawai. Honestly, it is a waste to do Hawaii and never leave the resort--you can do that in the Caribbean for much cheaper. If you do Hawaii, make sure to make the most out of it. We plan to see the Volcanoes National Park, Snorkel, Sail, Kayak, Hike, See the sun rise at 5am, Do the drive to Hana, maybe even surf if I get brave. There is so much great food and culture to experience...we'll be staying at resorts, but renting a car. We want to leave a a lot and experience paradise.

I recommend that all tourists go anywhere but Kona (on the Big Island) as I love it the way it was the last time I was there, without a ton of tourists. LOL!

Okay, Kona is my favorite place. I have been to Maui (eh, it was okay, but too many people). Oahu is a must see, if you have never been to Hawaii before. I would recommend the Pearl Harbor tour and the Polynesian Cultural Center.

I have only been to Oahu (5 times), Maui (once) and Kona (5 times), so I cannot speak about the other islands.

I love Maui, it's more mellow and the last time I went it was less of a tourist trap. There are so many things to do on all the islands. M & I went on a trip to Oahu last year to visit my family there, now I need to take him to Maui for a real vacation. If you go to Maui, check out Mt Haleakala. You go up super early and watch the sun rise, visit the volcano tour building and walk around then head on down to go snorkeling elsewhere for the rest of the day.

The big island of Hawaii has the Kona companies, best coffee and one of our favorite beers are located there! On Oahu they have a Kona pub but I think it would be amazing to check out the brewery itself.

Maui is NOT a party island. It is more of a couples island. Oah'u is the party island. There are numerous resorts to stay at..depending on what you want. I like the Aston Papakea..its condominium complex..full kitchen, etc so you can cook. Hawaii is expensive to eat at. There's a grocery store literally walking distance..stock up on food, cook when you want and save $$.

Do the Road to Hana, sunrise/sunset atop Haleakala, horseback ride, snorkel and Iao Valley. You'll love every inch of the island.

2nd what groomzilla said, especialy the road to Hana. we are booking maui jungle tours for that and will have a private guide for just the two of us.picks us up at the hotel and takes us to lots of cool sites in his jeep, and we get to swim under waterfalls and he captures the footage on dvd for us to have included in the price..its not cheap but for us its better than driving there,i read that road is very tricky and the driver will miss out on alot while driving..also agree with groomzilla about Maui not being a party island..everything i have read online does not point to that..Oahu is more the party island!

I've only been to oahu, and that was once, last year. it's gorgeous and full of things to do, and it doesn't take long at all to get from point a to point b if you're staying outside of waikiki, lol. FH and i rented a car, stayed at a condo on the west side of the island and went pretty much all over the place! we visited pearl harbor, went to the honolulu zoo, went hiking on diamond head crater, snorkeled in the hanauma bay preserve, did a luau and night performance at the polynesian cultural center, navigated the dole maze on the dole plantation, and enjoyed the following at kualoa ranch: ancient garden and fishpond tour, movie tour (visited the valleys where many movies were made). there is a TON to do! i'd like to go back and visit one or two of the other islands but i wouldn't be totally disappointed Smiley smile OH also if you decide to do oahu look into getting the hawaii entertainment book, or the go oahu card -- we used the card and saved some money here and there on our excursions!

@Heather...sounds like you had a nice time. Maui absolutely is NOT a party island. There are NO clubs on the West side...but plenty of beachside restaurants. There are few 'party' type restaurants on Front Street in LaHaina for those who are interested..but thats the extent of it. There is a nude beach for the adventurous called 'Little Beach' in Makena.

@Kathy R: Depends on when you go. I've been in July, August and December...December actually was very quiet and August wasn't all that busy either. June/July is more 'on season' so it might be.

I find Oahu to be the most tourist-y, hotels are stacked so close together its crazy....so it depends on what you are looking for. Pearl Harbor absolutely a must see regardless.

We went to Kauai (or Kaua'i) for our honeymoon & I highly recommend it. (check out Kauai.com-they are also on FB and post CONSTANTLY). I went to Maui with my parents 10 years ago, and although its beautiful, Kauai is COMPLETLY different. One BIG thing-in Kauai they have a rule that you cannot build a building taller than palm tree. There is only 1 hotel that doesn't fall under this rule (the Marriott in Lihue, HI) and that is because it was built before the rule was established.

Upon deciding on "our" island to travel to, I had talked to a few people and they ALL suggested Kauai over any other island & upon landing I could see why. Kauai is the "Garden Isle." It is also VERY diverse geographically. The west part of the island is desert like w/its famous red dirt & coffee plantation & the northern part is very lush & green almost like a rainforest.

While in Kauai (for 6 days) we went shopping, went to Waimea Canyon, did the Napali Coast (by Catamaran),

(cont..) went snorkeling, ate some AMAZING food, met really great people, did a luau (at Smith's) and some hiking.

My only personal suggestions-stay in the southern part of the island (Poipu, Lihue, Coconut Beach area). We stayed in Princeville (north) and found outselves driving HOURS to get to the Southern part of the island. There are no freeways only highways (with a speed limit of 50-but normally 30-45). Also (as funny as this sounds), bring a paper map. My DH has verizon and had little to no cellphone service pretty much everyone on the island. I had AT&T and basically never lost cellphone reception. Also-a cellphone charger (for the car).

In the southern part of the island there is also a Safeway, a few grocery stores & a costco.

Also-things close down a little earlier than normal (between 5-7pm) except resturants so if you want to go shopping somewhere-do it during the day. Fortunatly, there is a minimum 3-4 hour time difference from where you live (they don't do DST) so you will be ready for bed by then anyhow. Smiley smile

I'm sure no matter which island you go to-you will have a great time. The nice part with Hawaii is each island has something different and special to offer you and your FH. Just keep in mind-what ever island(s) you don't visit-you can come back later for. Smiley smile

I posted some of the photos I took around the island. (I'm also going to point out these photos are unedited. This is how it looked the day I took them).

Princess Cruises is now offering a Hawaii island-hopping cruise out of San Francisco or Los Angeles. This way you can see 4 islands, enjoy land excursions and shopping at each one, plus you would have a stop in Mexico on your way back :-) The cruise also offers on-board Hawaiian luaus, cuisine, Kona coffee tasting, lei making, and a ton of other Hawaiian treats! They do have a sale going on right now. Feel free to call or email me for more info! Alisha, *******@**********.***, 800.848.8747 x23.

If you're looking for laid back and romantic, try Kauai. There's lots of touristy stuff to do - luaus, there's a light house to visit, a place called 'Spouting Horn', you can visit the Waimea Canyon (it's like the Grand Canyon - so beautiful), the Fern Grotto (and cruise the Waimea River), shopping - it's great. My grandma took us to Kauai twice and we stayed at Plantation Hale (like Holly) which is more like a condo than a hotel. I've heard they have zip line tours now, too. Congrats and good luck!
