Having Wedding at Home

Abbey, on February 19, 2019 at 3:41 PM Posted in New Mexico Planning 0 4
Hello!
My fiance and I are most likely going to have our wedding at our home, we live on a few open acres on a farm with plenty of room for parking/ ceremony/ dance and party space for the reception. So far we’re at about 400 people to invite, but realistically probably around 250 will come. I’m wondering if we need any form of insurance or any legal issues with having the wedding at home? As of now we are just going to get a food truck friend to help cater it so we can have the type of food we want, and I don’t think they have any alcohol licenses. We were just going to supply an open bar ourselves with probably 80% beer and 20% wine. (And if people want to bring their own hard alcohol) am I living in dream world where this is all legal to do?? Haha! Or are there any legal steps I need to take to make this happen? I live in New Mexico, not sure if it’s a state by state issue.
Thank you for any help!!

Hey Abbey!! Welcome to WeddingWire!! Smiley ring I think the insurance question would be a great question to ask your current insurance agent or company. Even if you don't have to have any specific coverage, it might be nice to have something and ask a professional on their opinion just in case something happens. They might also be able to tell you about liquor and food liability coverage, which may or may not exist.

I would also call your county clerk's office to see if they have anything to add. Where I used to live, any outdoor event with alcohol with more than 50 people had to have a permit, even if it was on private property and the police needed to be notified in case of complaints.

No problem! You might not end up needing one, but it's always worth asking the experts! Smiley smile

Hey Abbey, Fellow local here. I know you're already neck-deep in planning at this point, but check your city's Coding policies as well. They should be on your city's website. And if you have any close neighbors, they should know you're having a big party, too. That way they can prepare for noise and parking.

How exciting, your wedding is just around the corner! We're having ours at someone's home, too. Keeping it easy and breezy. Congrats and best of luck next year!
