Hated my trial!

Meagan, on March 24, 2019 at 7:11 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 43
I'm so upset! I really really hated my makeup trial. I love all this makeup artists work. She always does an amazing job and I am so disapointed that I really hated how I looked. I am pale and have red hair. She made my eyebrows soooo dark they looked almost black and my skin was at least 4 shades darker then it is naturally. Im so sad. I already hired her for the day and to top it off shes basicly family. She is my fiances cousin girlfriend. What do I do! I know I can tell her what to change and what I would prefer but i feel so unconfident going into the wedding having hated my trial! I know I can ask for a second trial but I really don't want to spend $100 all over again. What do you suggest? I told her I liked golden brown natural tones. I think she heard gold and ran with it..... there is nothing natural about it! I'm so upset.... only good thing is I know her makeup is waterproof.... I cried all the way to my hair trial because I felt I looked like a clown! My hair trial however went wonderful and I'm very happy with that. Here are some pictures. I also came home and put my own makeup on.... Its know where near as neatly done or finished looking as hers but it feels more natural to me. Pleasr help me figure out what to do without being upset or sounding too harsh to the MUA.

If I were you I’d talk to her and say you’re not really happy with how it turned out and I’m sure she’ll understand. Explain what you said above about how it a little darker than what you were going for and you think the foundation shade is a little off. And ask if you can do another trial (maybe try and find some inspiration pics of what you’re going for to help). If this is her profession then I’m sure she won’t be offended—at the end of the day I’m sure she just wants you to be happy and confident on your big day. As for the cost, the girl I met with said if I’m not happy for any reason they’d re do the trial at no additional cost so maybe she’ll do the same for you. Good luck!

Oh wow, I love your hair!! The makeup is sadly heavy handed. But maybe show her some inspo pics and say how different you want it to what she had done.

Yea I showed her very different pictures. And even told her I like dark makeup on other people but not on me. I'm so frustrated and feel like she didn't listen at all

Im a redhead too and I am dreading the eyebrows lol. I do mine with "Gimme Brow" brow tinting gel and it is FANTASTIC. It can be applied heavier or one layer and do just the trick. I would bring it with you to use. The eye makeup looks ok to me, its just brow heavy. Have you had them shaped beforehand with threading? Might help! Also, cant go by this photo you gave-the girl is very dark-haired with a tanner skin. You won't get the same results. Try looking up pictures of wedding makeup for redheads.

The hair is nice, though I would ease up on the flowers. You do not want the flowers to take away from the style Smiley heart Explain this to your makeup artist! Tell them you were upset bc its too dark for you and didnt want to be mean by saying that to her

I honestly think you messed up with what you described you wanted. You said golden so she probably figured you wanted to look a little more bronzed and then the inspiration pictures are very far from natural. I would ask for another trial because you decided that actually wasn’t the look you were wanting and really let her know that you want to look natural and you didn’t like how full coverage and dark the foundation was

I didn't mess up how I described it.... I told her I liked those golden looks but knew it would be too much on me. I wanted that kind of look but more natural tones...she heard golden and went with it! She also asked if I wanted matte or glitter.... I said the stuff I use has a little bit of shimmer to it.... but this is ALOT of shimmer!

Yea I tried looking up red head makeup and its all terrible. I doubt she has ever worked on a red head before..... I have a brow gel I use that matcjes my hair perfectly and we already discussed using that instead of her stuff the day of. I am definitely going with smaller flowers these were just ones I picked up in a pinch. I couldn't find smaller ones in the right colors when I was looking.

I don't know much about make up, I hardly wear it and when I do it's very little, but I think what she did with you is very modest compared to your inspo pics. If I were you I would figure out exactly what you don't like, which it seems you have, and just explain to her that the more you look back on the photos the more you're deciding against this or that, or you'd rather have this instead of that. I think if you're very clear with what you didn't like then she should be able to change what she does the day of without another trial. If you don't do another trial I would try and pad your make up time so if she does something you still don't like you can wipe it off and start over. Also remember you want your make up a little heavier than usual for pictures. It may look unnatural to you in person if you aren't used to wearing it (like me) but it will look fine in the photos.

Yes I know it has to be heavier then normal.... and I know the inspo pictures ate heavy makeup. But they are the colors I like.... the light almost white insode corner to the dark brown/ black outside corner.....that is how I usually do my own makeup. I usually add a touch of pale gold shimmer to add some sparkle..... I really felt like the pictures I gave her were close to what I do but more glam....she didn't do those colors at all and thats whats upsetting. I think of the eyes were closer I wouldn't be so upset. I'm gonna talk to her

Maybe using inspiration pictures with women who have similar coloring to you would help? I understand why you don’t like the results but I do think they were similar to what you showed her.

Daughter is a redhead, so I completely understand what I think you were hoping for. I think part of the issue might have been your inspiration pictures; both of those photos have very dark eyebrows and a lot of bronzer and shimmer that looks great on those two brunettes (or, I guess the first one is kind of dark auburn?), but aren't as great on a fair redhead. Your HUMA may have been confused about the photos you showed her and what you said you wanted. I just Googled "wedding make up for a fair redhead" and lots of images with a much softer/more natural look popped up (e.g., Amy Adams and Emma Stone...). I don't like to post photos of daughter as she's not active on this forum and is fairly private about her social media use, but daughter looked gorgeous and natural with a softer more peachy blush and a soft raspberry lip. Her brows were definitely darker than usual (they normally kind of blend in to her face...), but not as dark brown & heavy as your HUMA went with yours. Her HUMA did a light coverage airbrush foundation that gave her a soft natural look while still allowing her freckles (sun kisses! Smiley winking ) to show through. In total, she still looked exactly like her natural self, just more polished and a little bit of glam for the big day. I'd look for some more inspiration pics that are more representative of your coloring and ask her to try again. Good luck!

PS -- your hair looks gorgeous.

Maybe that's where the confusion was then. She might have seen the pictures and just assumed you wanted it as heavy when in reality you just wanted the colors. I think if you're clear with her about what you didn't like then it should be fine, but if you really want piece of mind then do another trial and ask to be shown everything she is doing and be vocal if you don't like something. This is your day and you don't want to have make up you hate. Good luck!

Maybe show her some pictures like these! I don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, but I think these are beautiful subtle looks!

As a person who has done bridal make up before, it seems like your MUA is not versatile with applying make up to your complexion or face shape. The inspiration pics and maybe some of the other work you’ve seen may look different or come out really good bc certain faces are easier to apply make up on. Your eyelids are hooded and therefore eyeshadow application has to be totally different. Same thing with your complexion. It’s easy to make foundation look cakey if you don’t know what you’re doing. Im in the same boat bc I wanted someone who specializes in darker skin tones. Not everyone can easily apply makeup to my skin tone and still have it look natural. I would honestly express my concerns, but also look for other MUAs that have pics of ppl with your particular face shape/complexion that you can compare & are satisfied with. I know it’s a hard task, but I feel like your just going to run into the same problem with this MUA bc she just might not know what she’s doing?? I’m sorry your trial ended that way.. I’m so nervous for mine bc I can be very hard to please with make up lol. But your hair is BOMB!

From looking at your photos it doesn't look that bad to me, but if your not happy with it I would just talk with her. I know that it can be very uncomfortable given the relationship she has with your FH's cousin but as others have said this is what she does and honest feedback is a very important part of making sure her clients are happy. I would just tell her that the foundation is a bit darker than you would like and see if you can do another trial since you weren't completely happy with the first, especially since you already booked her!
