Guest traditions

Liz, on April 10, 2021 at 9:11 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
After a discussion with FH today about wedding "traditions" and realizing he had no idea what I was talking about. I'm specifically talking about things that guests do that are unplanned by the bride and groom. Are you all familiar with clinking glasses to get the bride and groom to kiss tradition at the reception or is that a regional or my own family circle thing? In addition, are there any other guest traditions that you're familiar with at weddings that I may want fair warning on so I know what to do lol? We have people coming in from all over the US and internationally. I don't want to be surprised lol.

Many of those things are regional or only within some families and social circles and not others. The same applies to everything actually. What is common in one group is completely foreign in another. Even in the same city/state/etc.

What are you looking for specifically?

It is common in my area for people to clink glasses to get a kiss, but if you ignore it... people stop doing it!

As Michelle said, a lot of that is all very regional, so people traveling in may not attempt anything.

Looking to see what types of these types of traditions are out there. I truly thought that the clinking glasses thing was a normal thing at all weddings in the US, I've seen it at all weddings I've been too. I happened to casually mention it to FH today and he had never even has heard of it. I know I have a family specific one, which I've already warned FH about. All the women on my dad's side put on the most obnoxious bright red lip stick and kiss the groom's face to leave lip prints lol. I'm seriously doubting they'll do it to him just because of COVID, but I know that one is just a family thing.

I HATE the clinking glasses “tradition” so since we are a gaming/nerdy couple we decided to put a spin on it.. we will have a D20 on our head table.. guests that want us to kiss must come up and roll the die on our table so we can see the result. 1-10 we kiss, 11-20 THEY kiss their spouse!!!
I also HATE HATE HATE that guests dont seem to respect other people’s property and they “decorate” the “get away car” i swear, if this happens to our car i will become a bridezilla and MAKE the person(s) who did it clean it up/off before we get in the car, and there will be no stupid tin cans dangling off the car Or streamers either

Clinking glasses to get the bride and groom to kiss is normal where I live in the US. Alternatively, sometimes guests are given little bells to ring instead of clinking glasses. I think the bells are a regional variation but I am not sure.

I’ve been to one wedding that did the glass clinking to kiss and it was awful! They just kept doing it over and over and over... even though it was obvious the couple was completely annoyed and over it
A “tradition” we have in our friend circle is to set up pranks/booby traps for the couple, either in their hotel that evening or in their home while they are gone on their honeymoon. I’m not sure where it started, or if this is something done broadly, but it is always done in our friend circle.

Never seen the glass clinking outside of tv and the movies.

I have definitely been to “clinking of the glasses” weddings, but that’s the only “tradition” I can think of that wasn’t planned by the bride or groom.

    I agree with Rebecca!
If our guests start clinking glasses to get us to kiss: we will ignore them. If I want to kiss my FW at the reception, then I kiss her unless she says no 😀😆. I don't need to wait for a guest to clink ... Kissing your S.O is not a thing you do automatically when someone else wants like a vending machine that drops a snack or a drink after putting a coin and picking what you want ... Some guests may find this fun, but I don't see the point in it.

First of all, your avatar is adorable!!!

Secondly, I think stuff like that depends on your crowd. For me personally, I would be very uncomfortable with the clinking glasses tradition, but if you want to do it, go for it! If you don't want to though, you don't have to.
