Groomsman Upset He’s not Giving Speech

Amber, on December 14, 2021 at 6:41 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
Early in the planning process, a groomsman casually asked about giving a speech. FH was like yeah sure without really thinking about timelines and all. Now that we’re getting close we’ve decided that 4 is too many speeches and we’ve decided the only people making speeches will be the two best man and the MOH. FH called the groomsman and was just like I’m sorry, but we really don’t have time in the schedule for more speeches. Groomsman hung up on him. Any advice on how to handle the situation?

Maybe he could give one at the rehearsal dinner instead? But honestly, don't give into him if you really don't want to; he's acting super childish.

I can understand the groomsman being annoyed as he may have already prepared a speech since he was previously told he could give one, albeit he hasn’t seemed to have handled the news in the most mature manner.

Personally, if the groomsman hasn’t been best contactable by telephone I would have FH text him and just explain something along the lines of “we originally said yes to you giving a speech but after having a large number of requests for speeches, we realised we won’t have time for all the lovely speeches planned so have just limited it to the best man and MOH to ensure it is fair to everyone who asked to give a speech, and we hope you can understand”.

Beyond that it is really going to be up to the groomsman to come to the table.

He's being a bit immature about this, but maybe he had something planned. Like PP said, Maybe offer to have him speak at the rehearsal?

A lot of people don’t care about toasts (much shorter than speeches at 2minutes max and keep audience attention) . Can you compromise and have an open mic type vibe at the rehearsal dinner? That way it doesn’t cut into reception festivities if you have no toasts planned.

He just need to get over it. It's not his wedding and you guys are entitled to pick who does speeches.

No one gave a speech at ours. We ran late with photos, and evidently my MIL forgot to tell my FIL/the BM that he was supposed to do a speech, anyway.
