Greek Heritage/orthodox help

Crystal, on February 3, 2021 at 1:23 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 7

My FH was born to a Greek family who attended Greek Orthodox Church. He was baptized GO when he was about a month old. He moved to another state (where I live) ten years ago. His family who was practicing GO are since deceased, and he has not attended a GO church in many years. We are due to be married in 6 months. I was baptized ELCA Lutheran, and we are having our wedding in a Lutheran Church, one reason being there are NO GO Churches in my state. We are wondering if there is anything we can incorporate into our wedding to help honor his religion or his heritage without it being offensive to the GO Religion or church. My pastor is pretty much ok with doing whatever we'd like, but we need help. Also looking for ideas for our reception. We did discuss Stefanas which i read can be an insult to the religion if not done by a GO priest. We also want to do "Witness Pins" and the "Jordan Almond odd number." Anything other ideas anyone can help me with?

We did the Stefanas and Greek dancing at the reception ❤️ Great to honor one’s heritage and lots of fun!

I’m asking my fiancé’s pastor if we can do the stefanas still and after our first dance, we’ll start with a Greek song. We also have a Greek dj, but many of our guests are American so it’ll be a little less Greek than my moms wedding lol. With the Greek dj the contract lists that any money thrown goes to him, but never saw that listed on an American djs contract so if that’s something you’re interested in I would just clarify where the money thrown goes (dj, couple, etc).

How are you incorporating Stefana's in yours?

    What denomination are you?

What denominational church are you being married in? How will you incorporate and will you list the meaning of Stefana in your program, so people aren't wondering what is going on?

Our ceremony will be at our venue outside in the garden area. I’m skipping programs, but I’m thinking the pastor could say something as it representing coming together. I’m also thinking of doing the white colored almonds for favors, which I’ll add an explanation too for people to know that it signifies. Greek Heritage/orthodox help 1
