Greece or Maui?

Megan, on January 19, 2019 at 4:16 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 16

FH and I have been to Maui (2015) and absolutely loved it. Considering going back there for our honeymoon because it is a good mix of beach/relaxation and aventure/excursions. We rented a jeep previously and explored the island a lot on our own and would do the same. My hang up is...we've been before. I can't help but feel the honeymoon should be somewhere new for us both, and maybe a little bit of a splurge or something we wouldn't typically do?? But I also know it's a "safe" destination because I know we will love it.

Cue Greece. Specifically a Mykonos & Santorini itinerary. I've done searches in the forums for people who are considering Greece or have been for their honeymoon but didn't find much in the way of hotels to consider, things to do, places to eat, etc. It was more just "it was so amazing!" The biggest thing I worry about with going to Greece is food...FH is really picky, and I would consider myself semi-picky. Neither of us like fish and I know that's a big part of the Mediterranean diet. Also how expensive is the food once there? So I guess this is kind of a multi-part question. Greece or Maui for our honeymoon? AND if you have been to Greece, are there lots of food options for picky eaters?

Athens doesn't interest me at all. I'm not into history. From my research Mykonos is excellent beaches and nightlife. Santorini is the idealic views and romantic atmosphere. If go we are going to do 3 nights in Mykonos & 5 in Santorini and splurge there for a private outdoor hot tub or pool.

If you decide to go to Hawaii would you be interested in checking out a different island? I’ve been to Kauai 3 times, but my FH has never been. So for our honeymoon we’re doing Maui, that way it’s somewhere new to explore for the both of us 😉

I have been to Greece, there are a lot of food options. You can get pizza, they have a ton of just grilled meat kind of dishes. I would sometimes have meals of just bread, feta cheese and olive oil because it was so good. The beaches there are beautiful. I personally would go with a place neither of you have been. There really isn't much to do in Athens if you don't like history, so totally fine to skip. I spent 3 days in Athens when I went and wished I just spent my entire time on the island (I went to Ios, which has a big nightlife). The food isn't too expensive. I would say probably cheaper than Maui. The one thing I'll warn is people do stand outside of restaurants and beckon to the people walking by to come in and eat, so you'll have to deal with that hassle, but I don't think you'll have issues with food.

Greece! I’ve been two Islands, Zakynthos and Santorini and it’s absolutely amazing. There’s plenty of food options, you don’t have to worry about that. I really recommend Zakynthos, it’s not as touristy and so much more affordable. Everything was so cheap and the food was declious.

I have not been to Greece, so I can't say anything about the food. BUT I think the idea of going somewhere new for your honeymoon is exciting and special. Why Greece though? I am sure it would be AMAZING, but if y'all have concerns would you consider going somewhere else new and exciting that may be a little friendlier for picky eaters?

Omg, we have had almost this exact same conflict! We wanted to go to Hawaii originally actually but we’ve both been together already (and FH went several times growing up) and it’s very far from us on the east coast. We wanted to go somewhere entirely new but I also had the thought of wanting a “safe” destination, being afraid to try somewhere new because what if we don’t like it for whatever reason and then THATS our honeymoon? I’m so glad I’m not the only one who’s had that thought process haha.

In our situation, we opted to go to the Bahamas because FH has never been and according to my mom I went once (for a few hours on a stop on a cruise when I was 6 and I have no recollection of it haha). A huge deciding factor in going here, which may sound silly, but was that we’re staying at the Grand Hyatt. Neither of us have ever been to this specific one, but my FH is an elite Hyatt member so we stay at their hotels all the time and they NEVER disappoint, especially the high-level resort ones! So even though it’s a new destination, it still feels pretty “safe” to us because we are very confident in our resort lol.

Im not saying you should necessarily do exactly what we’re doing haha, but hoping maybe our thought process/decision will help you figure out yours. Maybe there’s a new destination that feels a little safer with you being sure you’ll enjoy yourselves there?

Athens is stunning. People that don't like Athens don't understand that the city gets far too many visitors for it's size. But it worth every moment spent there. I had an amazing time and can't wait to go back some day.

OP, go to Greece. You've done Maui. Go to Greece. I didn't do Mykonos or Santorini but they look so stunning. There is ALL kinds of food everywhere. Anything you could want, you can find. Never once did I want for something else.

My husband and I have the rule that our first few trips would not be anywhere that the other had been. We wanted to experience things together for the first time.

My vote is for Greece but we got married there so I’m a bit biased Smiley smile

Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about the food. Everything was delicious and DH and I are definitely picky eaters. Neither of us really eats any seafood so we didn’t have any the entire trip. They had plenty of other things to eat, and I will say that they’re chicken Caesar salad is the best I’ve ever had!

If food is all you're worried about then I’d say it’s a done deal, go to Greece! 💙

If you were to decide to stay in Greece from 12 days I'd recommend splitting your time between Athens, Santorini and Crete. They're both different and worth the time to explore them. Crete is quite large and Car rental in Greece will give you maximum flexibility and access.

Greece all the way. Greece is incredibly beautiful, full with spectacular landscapes, 80% mountains, incredible islands and incredible mainland. And Athens is one of my top favorite cities for a couple of reasons. The history is incredible and far far more exciting than anyone may guess, and the monuments around the city are gorgeous. The Acropolis shows why it's such an impressive monument. But it's not just the history there.

People who say there isn't much to do in Athens, clearly don't know anything about Athens. Athens is a foodies paradise, it's perfect for shopping as not only does it have every form and brand of fashion that one could get, it has many mega shopping malls with hundreds of incredible shops, both foreign as domestic. And again, the best ingredients anywhere to find in the world regarding food. And then Athens life is vibrant, bars, clubs, cafe's and many other things everywhere. Some of the world's best bars and cocktail-bars are found here and so on. What else does one want

Athens has many things to go for, much more so than plenty other cities I have visited. And it's energy and how people live is another thing that sets itself apart. Also the other thing is. Athens has mountains around, the best city views because of these mountains around and some of the hills inside the city. And then the sea in front of Athens, with a kaleidoscope of islands, sea, and then mainland again with yet again more mountains. So Athens has besides everything else great hiking opportunities, and you can take a boat to many islands or visit it's prefecture called Attica with yet again more great culture, history, food, nature and so on.

And if you look at youtube blog video's from the last 1-2 years from various vloggers of Athens. those who rank Athens all rank Athens a 9,5 or 10 saying Athens has something magical that one cannot find anywhere else. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UGAQh6m7fk
