Greece 101?

Megan, on April 12, 2021 at 1:46 PM Posted in Honeymoon 4 6

My fiance and I are planning on doing our honeymoon in Greece in October 2022. However, we have no idea what we would want to do!!! I know, there are tons of activities and places to see; but, we are completely indecisive and would love to have some suggestions to narrow down our list and see if anyone has also gone to Greece for their honeymoon.

We are looking for any recommendations, locations/places to see, restaurant recommendations, etc.

Sound off below!!!

If you love ancient ruins; Athens for at least 4 days, Delphi, Sounion day trips. Personally love Athens, you can get good food anywhere. 'I Kriti' is well know and legit great food. 'Ella' best smoked eggplant dip. Great place to have an aperitif. Also head to the big market place to try fresh dishes with local ingredients.
The Islands are always popular. Greek locals always say to avoid Mykonos. They recommended Crete (largest and most diverse), Hydra and any of the small islands. We visited Santorini, it's beautiful, but very much like a theme park rather than authentic Greece because everything is geared towards tourism. Also be aware that because of the structure, the private pools almost always have a path in front of them so people can just walk by while you are bathing. Eat at 'Selene' (Michelin level) amazing happy mouth food. For a casual dinner, 'Ouzeri' is perfect. They do some great mussel dishes. We stayed in Fira (capital of the island, all transport goes through here) less busy with more to do. There are also great vineyards around if you like.
Each Island has it's own very local produce which is full of flavor do to the unique soil make up. Honestly, if we could we would be back there right now. Just waiting for the country to reopen. Amazing culture and cuisine. Love it!

Athens for the must see sites and then pick an island to visit (or go island hopping). Precovid, Santorini was one of the most popular but can get touristy. Myknos had a reputation for being the party island. I'd encourage you to explore some of the lesser known islands for a more authentic experience. Fiance and I did Chios a few years ago and loved it. It was close enough to Turkey so we also made a day trip there!

Where in Greece are you planning to go? I personally think you don't need to spend more than one day in Athens it's really run down and there's really nothing to do there besides the museums. I really liked the islands when I visited them. Naxos/Crete/Milos/Skopelos/Syros/Ionian Islands are all very beautiful. I would 100% recommend island hopping the Ionian Islands (Cythera/Corfu/Lefkada/Zakynthos/Ithaca/Paxos/Cephalonia/Paxi) each island is beautiful and has something special about it, there are tours that are available but ferries usually cost 10-50 euro so I would recommend going on your own. If you need help with an island-hopping plan private message me your budget and days you're spending there and I can help you find ferries/hotels

I found some island-hopping deals you might like

HIGHLY recommend exploring some of the islands! We were in Athens and spent 3 days there which was perfect for seeing all the architecture and the museums and then exploring markets and such. Then island hopped as well (Aegina has the BEST pistachio gelato/ice cream!!!) Would've loved to do more!

We did 2 weeks in Greece for our honeymoon last summer (yes the summer of 2020). It was our first time there and we spent a lot of time researching and trying to figure out how to connect all the places we wanted to visit. We flew into Athens and then spent 2 nights there. Then we did this Island Hopping Greece package through Tourist Journey. We found it very hard to coordinate between all the logistics getting to the Islands. Our highlight was Santorini but we really enjoyed everything especially the smaller and less well known islands. We were kind of lucky that being the year of corona, the places were all very quiet so even Santorini which is usually supposed to be crowded was not busy and so we had a very chilled experience. If it was a usual year, I would defi try to spend more time on the quieter islands.
