Is this for the registry or thank you gifts for your attendants?

A registry is a wish list of things you and your fiancé want and need that you would never spend your own money on. That list will be different for every couple. What have you both had your eyes on when you are out shopping but you can’t justify the expense at the time? Put those on the list. Also, contrary to popular belief, the same applies whether the couple has lived together 10 years or 10 days. Everyone can use upgrades and donate the old items to a local shelter or thrift store.

If you follow etiquette, a registry is a list of things the couple needs to set up the home. It was never meant for things you would never in a million years spend your own money on, just the opposite. This is also why it's not technically considered a wish list at all. Registry info is not included on an invitation, rather guests have to search for. it, either by looking it up on a website or asking someone close to the couple.

As far as the couple who is already living together, admittedly this is very common. While I've bought from many, many registries of couples who live together I wouldn't feel comfortable with it, personally.

But to answer the OP's question, a few things that come to mind that can last a lifetime (or close) include things like a Kitchenaid mixer, LeCreuset Dutch ovens, good quality pots and pans, frames for photo memories, beautiful bowls, serving pieces, platters and vases, as well as the traditional china, crystal and flatware.
