Getting your dress pressed

Ivy ORP, on October 2, 2019 at 3:37 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
I called around and looked at all the reviews for cleaners in our area that could steam or press my all tulle dress before the wedding. I bought it online so I couldn't get it done at a typical boutique or store. I was told $40 over the phone by the place with the best reviews. I thought they might not be considering the tulle, but what a deal even if they underquoted by $20 or so. My FW brought my dress to them and they told her it would be $90!!! I only spent $100 on the dress itself. I get it might not be easy because of the way it's made but am I overreacting about the price? I was on the phone at the office and couldn't intercede more than texting my FW about what a crock I thought it was. She told me it was done and she'd pick the dress up next Wednesday before I leave the office because this was just too important. Oh yeah, they said a week was "pushing it" to press a flipping dress!!!! I have been really chill about this wedding, but I want to go Bridezilla on them. How much did you all pay to get your dresses ready for the big day? How long did it take?

The tide cleaners near my house quoted $40 to press mine and could have it done within 24 hours. But I don't have a lot of tulle on it. I'm probably going to end up using my handheld steamer on it first.

My daughter had a lot of tulle. She had it altered and steamed. Cost was $450, but that's mostly due to the alterations which were pretty extensive. She had budgeted $500 so it was all good. Depending on the amount of tulle I could see how $90 would be warranted because they have to steam one layer at a time and you don't want to go too hot with the steam so as not to melt or damage it. Whether you paid $100 or $1,000 for the dress the time and labor would still be same. You still have your perfect dress for under $200 and that's a steal Smiley smile

For my dress it cost me $80 and took them 4 hours according to my tailor. Mine was a mermaid gown with organza.

I didn’t have to pay for my dress since the boutique did it but I did clean and steam/pressed afterwards and I pay over $150 just for dress alone. I don’t remember the exact total but I pay close to $190 with veil included. Now my dress was dirty after the wedding and I didn’t think it was that much.

My seamstress is doing mine. Alterations (taking up in the shoulders, creating sleeves), steaming (I also bought online so it came all wrinkled and is satin) and preservation afterwards are a little under $800. All in all, i don't think its too bad for all of that and storing my dress for about 10 months. that said, i've no clue what the individual charge is for my dress to be steamed.

Unfortunately I do not have any experience with this as my seamstress is pressing mine. I don't think $90 is unreasonable though.. I wonder now if most boutiques or seamstress do it for "free" given the fact individuals have used them to purchase a dress or for alterations so it's complimentary? Have you considered purchasing a handheld steamer and doing it yourself?

Thank you everyone. I think it just upset me so much because I was quoted much less initially. The one week thing is still upsetting me though. As long as I have my dress for the big day it will be all good.
