Getting Ordained in Missouri?

J, on January 20, 2019 at 12:12 AM Posted in Missouri Planning 1 5
My FH and I are asking his dad to officiate our wedding. We are going to look up all of the details and what not of how to get ordained before we ask him so we can give him all the info before he answers so he can make an informed decision (we will also pay for whatever fees may come up, if there are any).

Anyways, I’ve done some research but I’ve read a couple little conflicting things so I just wanted to ask for tips to make sure he’s 100% legally ordained and performs the ceremony 100% legally.

Also, we are getting married in St. Louis, MO, but we (and he) lives in Southern Illinois - idk if that matters at all.

Hi J! I think it's super awesome that you want your FFIL to officiate the wedding. That'll make the ceremony really special! Each state and sometimes each county has its own level of okay-ness with ordained officiants. I would definitely give a call or go and visit the county clerk's office where you're getting married, or whoever is in charge of marriage licenses in your county. (It's usually the clerk, but sometimes there's a register of deeds or wills or something like that.) They'll be able to tell you exactly what your FFIL would have to do in order for him performing the ceremony to be legit.

I'm ordained and I got mine online at Universal Life Church. They also have all the forms and credentials that he would need.

    Hey Dachelle,
Are you able to legally perform marriages in MO? I’m curious about the ins and outs too since we’ve asked my brother to do it and I want to make sure I get it all in order for him.

Absolutely! There's actually not a lot of restrictions when it comes to getting ordained. You have to basically swear an oath and it's legal and binding. I've performed 3 weddings so far and submitted their paperwork to the cities/counties where I performed the ceremonies and all 3 of them have their official wedding certificates. As long as he reads the material and understands which parts of the ceremony is legally required then he shouldn't have a problem at all!
