Hi so I'm getting married in September but I'm on ssdi my fiance isn't and I was wondering can you use some of your social security benefits to help save for the wedding

The only way I could think of is by having shared expenses or living arrangement so your funds would cover those common expenses if this is permissible.

I have no idea about the implications or benefits of using cash app and how that relates to the ssdi question.

No, you can't. If social security caught wind that you were spending on what they consider luxuries you could lose your benefits. That money is meant for essentials. As for your savings questions, I believe there is also a relatively low limit on what you can have in savings to be eligible.

Weddingwire is probably not the best place to ask this question.

But CM is right that savings limits may apply. Savings accounts are considered "countable resources" and there are certain amounts that exclude you from SSDI eligibility. I don't know how cashapp affects this.

To add to what other posters have said, you may want to look at your continued SSDI eligibility once you are married. It’s unfortunate, but marriage can actual disqualify you from benefit eligibility by way of your spouse’s income.

I'd be worried about them going after past income if there was any indication that this cash is being used inappropriately. Your FI can save up for the wedding on his end, out of his income. That's not a problem. But putting any part of your SSDI paycheck toward the wedding is fraud.

Oooh that's definitely a slippery slope. I would highly advise against this until you actually speak to someone at the SSA. And SSDI is income-based based so you are aware that you will likely lose your benefits once married, right? Not everyone is aware so just wanted to make sure. If you have any questions about how your benefits will be affected by getting married I'd definitely speak to someone far in advance.
