From big! To tiny

Crystal, on April 15, 2020 at 1:50 PM Posted in Planning 1 8
Has anyone switched from a big wedding to a tiny one? How’d it go? What would you change if you could?
I’m trying to have a back up plan for our 9-26-2020 wedding ( first day of fall)
We’ve been planning our wedding for almost two years due to not wanting to be in debt and still having the dream! Now with all this resurgence of the virus in fall talk I’m trying to find a way to have a mini wedding but still have the feel I’ve been dreaming of. Thanks in advance!! Hope you’re all being safe and staying healthy!

We switched! Granted, it wasn't due to the virus. Our original guest list was over 300 people.. my FH has a huge family. But between the costs to feed and hang out with all of these people .. most of which we only see once a year.. it just didn't make sense. So we are now having a destination wedding.. it is about the same cost as the original wedding idea, BUT we get a weeks vacation in paradise with approx. 50 our our closest family and friends. We're both much happier with it and it is much less stressful. We can actually enjoy the wedding night now as well, as we won't be running around making sure we say hello to 300+ people throughout the night. Instead, we are having a welcome dinner when with everyone so they can all meet each other and say hi, a group excursion, the wedding day, and a day after brunch. Plus any extra shenanigans in between Smiley tongue

We kinda did but due to cost, not Covid. A DW was too costly for us & guests so we did a micro-wedding (15 guests) then a local reception months later (50 guests).

You could always splurge on a mini-wedding of your dreams and then in 2021 (maybe for your 1-year anniversary) host a cake & punch reception, or brunch, for a large group of friends & family if you really want it. But for now, enjoy your small wedding this fall.

Wow! And I thought 50 was going to feel small lol. I mean, everyone that I have known that has done a small wedding like that said that they loved it and wouldn't change it for anything. You could even do like a simple reception on another date if you wanted to include the rest of the family. A couple we know had a reception for everyone at their parents house and just had some food catered and it was great. We also might end up doing something similar after, like a casual BBQ summer get together

We started planning small from the get-go.
My first wedding was large to me at 100 guests. However I’ve been to weddings with 200-300 guests and it’s impossible to interact much less say hello to everyone. It’s as much my ideal and FH’s vision to have an intimate wedding.

You’re welcome! It actually was a lot of fun having two events. You can always wait until 2021 to gauge your interest (and finances) before hosting a bigger bit more casual party.

    Hi Crystal,

I like these suggestions from PP! It's very proactive to create a Plan B now.

I hope we'll be closer to "normal" around the time of your wedding, but no one really knows for sure. (Fingers crossed!) As you consider your back-up plans, I would recommend touching base with your vendors (especially your venue) to see if they're making any suggestions at this time. You also could ask about their availability for the future if you're thinking something small in September and something bigger next year.

Here's a related discussion with September brides: Covid-19. Wedding 9/4/20.

Also, as you may have seen, WeddingWire has created resources that may be helpful as you navigate the planning process: Our COVID-19 Weddings Advice Guide. You'll find articles like this one: What to Do About Your Wedding During the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Best of luck to you! Smiley heart
