Family heirloom ring! / 9 months married

Gen, on March 4, 2020 at 11:44 AM Posted in Married Life 0 24

Husband and I just got back from visiting his grandma across the country. She hadn’t been able to make it to the wedding (she isn’t in good enough health to travel) but she is the relative that both he and I are closest to. We watched our wedding video with her which was so special! She really got to feel like she was there.

Anyway, now we are 9 months married and while we were there she told me she wanted me to have her diamond ring, which was originally her mother in law’s (my husband’s great grandmother). It is so gorgeous and so special and I love it!

But I’m also at a loss for what to do hahaha. Of course we’re 9 months married now so I already have my engagement ring and my wedding band set which I love. It’s also like 2 sizes too big on me and she told me to just have it resized but I feel like I’m nervous to do that and I want to keep the integrity of the ring to pass down to my daughter/granddaughter and what if they have bigger fingers than me? Lol.

So I bought a ring sizer and I’m thinking of just wearing it on my right hand? But is that weird to have a diamond ring on both hands? This one is also bigger and way more blingy than my actual engagement ring 😂

Just curious for all your suggestions and if any of you have been in this situation of inheriting a family heirloom ring AFTER you’re already married!Family heirloom ring! / 9 months married 1

I would take it to a jeweler to see if you can get it resized. If they think it's okay to do so, then you should! You can wear it out for nice events on another finger or put it on a necklace. Then you can pass it onto your children one day Smiley smile

Not weird at all. I would absolutely wear it on the right hand. Just make sure the ring sizer won’t ruin it, as I’ve heard of they happening. If the ring I platinum, the sizer has to be platinum, too. You can’t mix other metals with platinum. It’s beautiful! What a treasure!!

That’s a gorgeous ring. Think it’s fine to wear rings on both hands

It’s a beautiful ring. I’d keep wearing it on my right hand and then pass it on to my daughter.

I think it's fine to wear diamond rings on both hands. Especially since it is a ring that has special meaning.

I think it’s okay to wear a diamond ring on each hand! I’d get it resized if a jeweler says it’s okay! My mom wears a nice ring on each ring finger. 😊

I agree with this. Maybe wear for family and special events. I have friends that sometimes do not wear their ring at all lol.

Thank you! I’m mostly just nervous about my children potentially having to size it up again later on because I know it’s much more difficult to size up. I have really tiny fingers... my left ring finger is a 4.5 and right is a 5, and I’m guessing this ring is about a 7. I’m just worried I’ll size it down to a 5 and then my daughter will end up being a size 7 or something and THEN it’ll wreck it to size it back up again... Idk I just feel so nervous being trusted with something so valuable (both monetarily and sentimentally lol) I‘m so scared to mess it up!

Thank you! I hadn’t heard of a sizer being able to ruin it... The ring is white gold, I just got one of these plastic sizers, that should be fine right??Family heirloom ring! / 9 months married 2

I'd just wear it and get it sized! Your kids could always get a new setting for the diamonds or it might just be able to size up correctly. Or diamonds may not even be a trend then and they may not want to use it haha! I wouldn't stress, I'd just appreciate it & wear it now and your kids will be happy to inherit it in anyway!

Lol true! My husband is all “don’t mess with it just wear it occasionally and keep it in the safe deposit box” but his grandma is like “wear it honey I want YOU to have it” 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Does it fit one of your other fingers? Just because it was once and engagement/wedding ring doesn’t mean you must wear it on your ring finger. 😁

That ring is beautiful. If its a full eternity band it will be very difficult to resize, but you can bring it to a jeweler for a professional opinion. If you and your FH feel comfortable with you wearing it, you can just wear it on your right hand with the re-sizer (I used a silicone/plastic coil shaped one before getting my e-ring resized and it didn't damage my ring at all and made it more secure) or you can wear it on a chain around your neck if you think it will distract from your actual wedding jewelry. Or you can just wear it for special occasions and not every day.

I have an heirloom ring as well! It was my great grandmother’s and it’s so precious to me. My FH will also have an heirloom ring from his grandfather. My mom got her mother’s ring after being married for like 12 years and she just stopped wearing her old engagement ring, since she obviously kept wearing her wedding ring she didn’t feel like she was choosing just one.Family heirloom ring! / 9 months married 3

Thank you!, Gen I was truly honored my grandfather trusted us with it. The only wedding stress dream I’ve had so far is losing my ring!
