European honeymoon

K, on July 29, 2021 at 10:21 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 8
Hi all, my fiancé and I want to travel to France for our honeymoon, and do a short road trip to Germany. This would involve driving through Belgium.

For anyone in Europe, what are the border crossings like right now? I’ve never been (I’m from the USA) and I have no idea how this works, especially right now.
Sorry if this isn’t the place for this question but I have been scouring the internet and not found a clear answer. I know there are some European ladies on here so I figured it would not hurt to ask.
Thanks!

Someone from Europe will know better than I do, but because all 3 nations are in the European Union, there isn't really much of a border crossing. Things may be different due to Covid, but traditionally you just drive through lol.

Ok, thanks, yeah that’s what my fiancé thought too. But I’m not sure because they have different rules for entry depending on what country you’re coming from, whether you’re vaccinated, etc. So I assume there must be some sort of border crossing… otherwise how do they enforce that?

Hello ! I'm from Europe, we're a Polish-French couple so we are traveling through the borders that you mentioned. In France you need a Pass to do everything, actually... Not only coming from abroad, but going to a restaurant, a mall, etc. The Pass = being fully vaccinated, having a negative test or having been immunised. However, they do not control absolutely everyone, so couple of times I spend a lot for tests for nothing....

In Germany, all depends on the Land, they have different rules. But the base is the same : it's better to have The Pass.

Thanks! Yeah, we are expecting to have to get one. So far it doesn’t look like there’s a way to upload my American vaccination info into the French/European system, but we are expecting that information to be forthcoming in the next month or so.

What I’m really wondering is, what actually happens at the border? Do you just drive through? Is there a border check? Do you have to wait in line?

We are trying to figure out our itinerary and aren’t sure how much time we need to expect for border crossings. Thanks!

Normally you just drive through if you're in a local car. Last months I did 4 tests which were obligatory in theory, but actually I spent money for nothing as the police wasn't there. But they always can be, unfortunately... It's not event the fine to pay - it's the fact that in France they order people without a test or pass to self-quarantine during 14 days, which is a nightmare if you're on holidays, so I wouldn't risk it ! When I was going to Germany, there was nobody. But during the weekend there were controls.

Thank you!! That is super helpful. It sounds like they are there at random, or during popular travel times. If you don’t mind answering one more question, when you were there during the weekend where they had controls, about how long did it take to get through? Is it a long wait?

I'll be soon traveling again, tuesday probably. I'll tell you then how it went.

It wasn't long very long at the border the last time, I would say about 10 cars... so a little bit of waiting.
