Envelope spending and saving

Catherine, on April 22, 2021 at 12:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
Does anyone have good tips or apps for envelope saving? Meaning saving specific amounts of money for specific items (not saving money on envelopes! Haha) We were using Qube Money for a while but we don’t like it as much and we’re having some issues with it. We know if we can set aside certain amounts for things like “the venue is x amount” and “my wedding dress is x amount” we’ll be more organized. But haven’t found the right way to do that! Any apps that help with that or any tips on how you saved for your wedding that helped? Our budget is very reasonable and realistic- we just don’t want to have to see ‘xx’ amount of dollars in a savings account without it being allocated to something specific if that makes sense. Thank you!

I used the budget app on here, price checked all around shutterfly, vista print , amazon, michaels craft store walmart target, for things like envelopes and such and then slowly bought things each month so it wasn't so hard on my wallet

Thank you! Yeah we have a budget on here too! So we know roughly about what we should/want to spend on catering and venue and photography and such. I’m just not really wanting to have it all pile up in my savings account. I’m looking for ways to separate it out more so I can put a certain amount towards each category if that makes sense. We aren’t even looking at decor yet! Thank you though!

I kind of feel like you're making it overly complicated for yourself. Just mentally earmark a certain amount of money in your savings account for wedding stuff, or if you really want, open a separate account just for wedding stuff (if you don't already have a joint account with your partner, this can then transition into your joint savings account for other purchases/financial goals). Put a certain amount of money every month into that account and then keep a spreadsheet/budget (whether on this app or just on Excel) for everything like attire, venue, food, etc.

Google Sheets has a free wedding planning template that is pretty detailed and budget is one so you can figure how much things cost and keep track that way.

Also the little things here and there that you pick up might not seem that expensive or noticeable to your budget but they add up very quickly.

Thanks Hannah! That’s what we’re doing for a general budget. But we want to separate it out so we can see how much we have for each category. For us, having a lump sum of money for our wedding is too complicated. But having “xx in this ‘envelope’ for catering so far” is very helpful. That way we can see what needs to go where. Thanks for the suggestions though!

We’ll try that. Thank you. We might just go back to Qube. That is an app that separates out your money in a savings account way so that you can allocate a certain amount towards one thing or another! So instead of “$xx amount” in your savings account. It would be “$xx amount” in your savings account with “$xx amount allocated towards venue” or decorations. Or catering or what have you so we know how much we still have to save. We have a budget, we just like separating out the money. Thank you!
