Engagement ring bigger than wedding band

Gen, on September 6, 2018 at 9:21 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

So my engagement ring is a weird size right now, kind of between 5.25 and 5.5. I have thin fingers and large knuckles, so it slides around and spins a lot, but doesn’t go over my knuckle unless I force it. I just picked up my wedding band yesterday and it was sized to a 5.25. It’s a little hard to get on and off but it fits perfectly when it’s on. I thought it would be fine since there’s literally less than .25 size difference between the two, but when I wore them together I noticed the engagement ring sliding on my finger was rubbing against the wedding band and even sliding over it slightly.

I feel like I can’t wear the two together like this because the engagement ring keeps rubbing against the wedding band and I’m worried it’s going to cause damage to both of them. I’m considering sizing the engagement ring down to a 5.25 but the jeweler told me to think about it, because resizing loosens the diamonds. So I’m hesitant resize because of that and because I’m afraid if my fingers swell for whatever reason then they’ll both be too tight.

Will it even make a difference? Will it stop/lessen the problem of the two rubbing against each other if the engagement ring is slightly smaller, to be the size of the wedding band...? Opinions? Anyone had a similar issue?

I had 1 jeweler tell me that about resizing my ring and then a bunch of others tell me that something that slight won’t affect the integrity of the ring. It’s if you change it like 1.5-2 sizes that’s when it’s an integrity issue.

The only way to really solve the issue of them rubbing is to have the wedding band and engagement ring tacked together. That prevents the rings from rubbing and causing potential damage and quicker wear to the prongs. There are options such as sizing globes or a horseshoe that can help to prevent your ring from spinning and allows you to get the ring over your knuckle. It may cost a little extra but it can be helpful. I work at a jewelry store so I see things like this a lot!

Just wondering - are you wearing your engagement ring or your wedding ring closer to your hand? My e-ring is a little big, but when I wear it with my wedding band, it sits higher on my finger, which is slightly wider than the base of my finger, so it doesn't move around as much (wedding band on the bottom).

I'd also consider getting the soldered to tacked together, as PP said.

My jeweler told me that the wedding band should be .25 to .5 smaller than the e-ring. Since the wedding band sits farther up on the finger (at the narrower portion) it needs to be a bit smaller. The e-ring will then sit lower on your finger (closer to the knuckle) and should be a bit larger to accommodate.

If you find it uncomfortable or the rings are spinning then discuss it with your jeweler. Adding sizing beads or having the rings soldered together might solve your problem.

Do you have the ring insured? Even if I lose a diamond, they will replace it for free. HOWEVER

my engagement ring was a 7 and had to size it to a 6 (before it was given to me) about a month after I had the ring, I got it cleaned and they noticed the diamond loose, so they did that for free.

then, a couple of weeks later, a part of my engagement ring broke off. This time they made me a new ring in my size. FOR FREE!!!

So i would look into it and consider sizing it.

I’m wearing my wedding band on the bottom and engagement ring on the top. I thought that may have happened too but my wedding band is really thin so it didn’t make much of a difference!

Engagement ring closer to the knuckle, I mean. I realized saying “bottom” and “top” wasn’t very clear lol

Can you solder them together? That usually stops rubbing. And ask if they can do it without the sizes changing?

My wengagement ring is sized smaller than my wedding band
. My wedding band is sized .25 bigger because my band is thicker than the band on my e ring. I find this to be a nice combo and my rings sit flush against eachother. I wouldn’t want either of my rings to slide over the other. I have a thin band that I never wear because my e ring slides over it and it bothers me.
